University of Southampton Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Hello all,
I recieved my offer from Uni of Southampton and have been wondering if anyone else has applied to a similar course at Southampton or is currently taking one, just to get peoples thoughts on the course and university. I applied for MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering HH61, and have applied to (and gotten offers from) Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool (I did also apply to Cambridge for Engineering but that was not meant to be).
I am currently taking Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Computer Science and have done an artefact EPQ where I made a robot. I am not sure whether to firm Southampton or Sheffield, the entry requirements for Southampton are higher - which isn't an issue - but I don't think it is really a positive either. From what I have seen I think that the facilities at Sheffield are better than they are at Southampton, just wondering what other people think and if they have applied what their intentions are.

I applied to both as well for EEE. From what I've heard, Southampton's facilities for this department are one of the best in the country. Both unis are very strong for engineering, but for EEE Southampton is probably a bit better. Try visit both places on their offer holder days and speak to people who study the course there so you can make a final decision later on. Also, bear in mind that this course was in clearing this year for Southampton, with the requirements being ABB or AAB if I remember right.

Hi @Not_Dane_Heart, congratulations on your offers!

From the Southampton side, we have a strong reputation for EEE. Our MEng degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology for Chartered Engineer. We're also joint 3rd in the UK for EEE (Guardian University Guide, 2025), and have a large range of industry-level facilities. And, you'll be taught by active researchers who are leading in their fields.

But it's not all about the course or university itself. There's also the city and lifestyle to consider. Have a think about where you'd like to spend the next three to four years. Think about things like: Southampton is closer to the sea, Sheffield is based in the Peak District - which would you like better?

Have you visited us or Sheffield at an Offer Holder Visit Day yet? It's a great chance to get onto the campuses and get a feel for the student life, accommodation and speak to staff and students to get a vibe of how these will come together during your 4 years at university. (If you can't make it to one of our in-person visit days, we also have a range of online ones available!)

Wishing you all the best in your journey,

Bea
