Can I do Access to HE without English & Maths?

I want to do midwifery at university and need an Access to HE course, but don’t have GCSE or Level 2 English/Maths yet. Has anyone managed to start an Access course while studying these at the same time? 😊

Yes I’m currently doing an Access to Science course and have an offer for vet medicine from Bristol. You must resit the GCSE alongside the course, that’s what I’m doing

Hey there! I left school with no exam results and went to college when I was 29! They had me take some tests so they could see where my level of learning was. No surprise, it wasn't very good as I left school when I was 12. So I ended up doing an access to skills for further study course. And then from there I had what was needed to do my access to biological sciences. So I assume it would be the same in which they get you to take some tests at a computer to see where your English and maths are at and if they are good enough you can do the course that you want to, and if you need to improve then you will do a course to bring you to that level

Your best option is to go to the college and they will advice you of the way in which they do it and what your options are.

Sign up to do functional skills English and maths. Most universities accept.

Hi yes many access to HE students start the course while completing level 2/GCSE Englsih and Maths alongside it. I believe some colleges allow you to study them in parallel, just check with your chosen college about their specific set up.

How did you manage to pull that off?

I’m on track to achieve Distinction*’s for bio, chem and physics. I smashed my SAQ as well, it’s a combination of all

In your Bristol offer has it stated you need to get your gcse? Like explicitly in the terms of your ucas offer ?

Yes absolutely it’s part of the entry requirements

So if they haven’t stated it in my entry requirements on ucas what does that mean?

You need to check the entry requirements for the specific course. It’s highly likely GCSE Maths & English are required at C minimum but best to check with the university. I have a conditional offer, meaning I need to meet all entry requirements for my course. GCSE Maths & English are non negotiable
