I am at the ending of my Foundation in Psychology with counselling, I find the Foundation year beneficial to me , now that I am entering into the main study area , I was wondering how was it in terms with the essays.

You might find essays some getting used to - I certainly did anyway. But they ease you into things in year 1 and as long as you ask for help if you need it, you'll be alright

Hi @Anyasmithe69,

Great to hear that your foundation year has been beneficial! 😄

I'm currently studying BSc Psychology and Criminology for my third year and have found the essays to be challenging but manageable. There is a bit of a jump up each year in expectations but I have found that the practice you get from assignments each year alongside the feedback you are given helps to really develop your ability as you need. I would recommend really reading any feedback you are given and ensuring you understand why you get the grade you do, you should be able to identify where you've done well and where you could improve to reach the higher grades.

I have frequently arranged meetings with whoever has marked my assignment to discuss the feedback in more detail, particularly as it can be hard to interpret what someone says in written form sometimes compared to an in-depth conversation in person. If this is possible for you when you begin studying then I really recommend doing this too, its been really valuable for me 😊 you could also just ask for more detail via email if that is easier.

Some personal advice is to not be too hard on yourself too and remember it is a learning process! I think I was way too critical of myself early on and it led to a lot of stress around assignments and deadlines. Now I've been studying for a while I have learned that perfectionism is unrealistic and approach things differently, but this was definitely a lesson I had to learn! I also try to approach my assignments in plenty of time so I can keep asking questions to lecturers and show them a plan where possible, rather than leaving it until later and putting unnecessary pressure on myself - although this can be easier said than done!

I have also found there is lots of support available for academic writing at university. This could be from your lecturers and other staff, such as programme leaders, module leaders or personal tutors. But also your university library will usually have some academic support resources such as books, webpages, videos and also small courses or workshops. I am going to be doing a workshop soon in writing concise sentences (not my best skill!) run by the university library online. Asking what essay support they have available could be helpful if you are worried about anything and you could also look on your uni website 😊

All the best!

Hi there,

Essays will vary in terms of length, content and frequency across courses. At Durham, we have a balanced range of assessments, so we only have around 3-4 essays throughout the year, paired with other MCQ, presentations and in-person exams.

It can be tricky to get the hang of things at first, but make sure that if you need any help, or anything clarified, to ask. 😊 Your lecturers want to see you do well, and it's normal to feel confused at first.

I hope this helps,
