(Human) geography work experience

Hello, I am in year 12 studying Geography, Chemistry, and Mathematics. I got 11x grade nines at GCSE and I am currently predicted 3x A* at A-Level.

My passion is for human geography, to find answers to resolve the most complex issues around economics, development, and culture in our dynamic world, and I intend to study BA Geography at a top university to pursue this interest. I think that in the future I would like to involve myself in education or politics, in a role where I can use strong leadership skills and be satisfied that I am contributing towards a better world.

Now I must seek out my own work experience to be done just before the summer holidays, and I am quite unsure. I know it does not need to be directly related to my intended area of undergraduate study, but more about the ability to develop useful transferable skills. I've been considering getting in touch with perhaps my local council, or even my constituency's Member of Parliament for work opportunities. Perhaps nearby university departments too?

Anyway, I hope people can give me some advice and guidance to steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

It doesn’t have to be exactly what you want to do as a career because that is likely to change slightly over the next few years anyway, maybe even based on the experience you get! It’s great if you can find something related to your potential degree choice as well so yes contacting some places locally which relate to your interests is a great idea. Maybe look at museums and wildlife organisations too depending on your interests and any formal programs that run locally. The work experience i did in year 12 wasn’t anything close to what id consider for a career but i still found it extremely valuable and found a way to relate it to my interests pretty well so id suggest you do the same 🙂
