How do I become a Paramedic?

I want to switch careers to becoming a paramedic. Although I want to pursue the Apprenticeship route and not have to complete a second degree at University. I want to first either do the Assistant Ambulance Practitioner role or Emergency Medical Technician. I have English and Maths GCSE’s although I don’t have Science. My A-Levels are all IT related. I’ve tried contacting my local Ambulance Trust although they’ve been useless and of no help does anyone know the pathway please or what to do please or where to start?

Hey @User_name001

The apprenticeship route typically recruits throughout the year dependent on the trust. You would typically start off as an AAP after a training period and progress to a paramedic. This will typically involve a period of time at university aswell.

I’d definitely reccomend keeping your notifications on for NHS jobs !

Here’s the application requirements for the apprenticeship programme for wmas:
https://www.wmas.nhs.uk/work-with-us/explore-roles/student-paramedic/

5 x GCSEs (including English, maths and science) at grade C / 4 or above (or equivalent)

An A Level or equivalent level 3 qualification

A full UK Driving Licence with no more than 3 penalty points

Provisional Category C1 on your Licence; you must have completed your forms, your medical and returned the forms to the DVLA at the point of application

A passion and motivation to provide excellent patient care to the people of the West Midlands

Willing and able to undertake full rotational shift patterns, covering 24 hours, including evening, weekends, nights, Christmas and Bank Holidays.

Best of luck with your application! I’m currently doing the university route to become a paramedic so if u did have any questions about that then i’m happy to answer 🙂

Hi Molly. I have English and Maths as Gcses although I have no science. Would I be able to do a paramedic course and funding for the course would student finance still fund me even though I did a degree in the past.

Hey!

I’ve just had a look on the BCU entry requirements page for paramedic science and it doesn’t specify science as a required GCSE, just english and maths at a C.

Here’s a link to this page: https://www.bcu.ac.uk/courses/paramedic-science-bsc-hons-2026-27

Im unsure on whether your previous degree would meet the entry requirements, so you should definitely contact the student enquiries number linked below, even just to give yourself some more information on this.

In regards to the fundings, you would need to contact student finance to find out how your existing degree affects your eligibility. There is also the NHS learning support fund which you should look into if you are accepted into the course .

Hope this helps

Hey !

The BCU course requirements don’t state GCSE science as a requirements.
Here’s a link to those : https://www.bcu.ac.uk/courses/paramedic-science-bsc-hons-2026-27

You should definitely contact the prospective student enquiries team regarding your previous degree as to whether this would meet the course requirements, i’ll link their contact details below.
https://www.bcu.ac.uk/about-us/contact-details

I’m unsure on the eligibility for student finance with a previous degree so you should contact them to discuss this. If you are eligible you can usually receive the NHS learning support fund on top of this, which is typically a grant of £5,000 a year.

Sorry i can’t be of more help !
