The Student Room Group

Students aged 18+: do you ever feel trapped inside your own head?

Hi I’m Grace, an undergraduate student at University of Greater Manchester. For my dissertation I will be looking at Maladaptive Daydreaming and its effects on students aged 18+. Some may see daydreaming as a coping mechanism/ escape but what if it just worsens the situation without you even being aware of it?

Feelings of low mood are often really common in student populations especially when combined with stress, which has been shown to evoke cycles of repetitive thinking. As a form of mental escape our brain may use maladaptive daydreaming to alleviate this (a way for the brain to dissociate from stress/ low mood) but by doing so unintentionally allows the cycle to continue?

Maladaptive daydreaming is not yet a classified as a disorder in the DSM-5, this study will hopefully help to spread awareness of its maladaptivity providing recognition for those who suffer.

I would really appreciate your participation!
Thank you!
