Thoughts on my uni choices?

Hi,

Year 12 state school student aiming for investment banking/high finance

A-levels: Maths, Economics, Geography, EPQ likely predicted 4 A*s
GCSEs: 999888877

Not going to list out every supercurricular but assume strong personal statement

Thinking possibly:

Warwick Econ
Durham Econ
Bristol Econ
Insurance e.g Manchester, Nottingham etc

Maybe Cambridge Land Economy, UCL Econ as other choice

If applied Cambridge, wouldn’t apply ucl.
Would be Cambridge, Warwick, Bristol, Durham, insurance

Just want to hear people’s opinions and what they would recommend.

Many thanks.

I get why ur doing land economy at cam and not pure econ, but just be careful with your ps, cos if its leaning too land economy and not pure econ enough unis like Durham and Warwick may not like that and to be brutally honest you may not get cam anyways. Then you need to ensure that ur ps isn’t too pure econy as cam wont like that and will know that you’ve just done that course because its less competitive than econ. So id say brill stats and brill chances for all of ur offers, but be careful with ur ps. Id say frame it like ur really interested in economics and then specifically in the law sector of econ or something !!! Best of luck

Thankyou so much for opinion and advice. Honestly my plan if I applied for camb land econ and 4 other pure econs would be too just keep my ps the same as if I was applying for 5 pure econs as cambridge say that they understand its a niche course and therefore understand if ps isn’t direct land econ related. And also the “my Cambridge” application thing be highly beneficial for land econ. Finally the fact that compared to other unis mentioned I feel like camb don’t look into ps as much, maybe land econ do more than like pure econ at camb but you know what I mean.

Basically want to maximise chances at camb as well as maximise other uni offers considering camb offer chances low.

But also realise the fact that a land econ degree from camb may offer more opportunities for IB then pure econ at Durham, Bristol (probs similar w Warwick?).

Thats my thoughts regarding PS situation.

I’d like to apply for pure econ > land econ at Cambridge (and as a course would prefer pure anywhere) but I don’t do FM so feel very low chances- waste of an offer.

Need to consider whether do like ucl/warwick pure econ (smash out TMU) or camb land econ and Warwick

oh I didn’t realise that about the cam ps. I think you’re in a brilliant position then! I agree that no FM means no pure econ at cam. I think knowing that that you’ve made the best decision for your application! Good luck !

Your grades are great and if you do a good PS you have a very strong application.

High finance/IB is so competitive and it's definitely not getting any less competitive by the time you will be applying for internships/grad roles, so going to a target uni is really gonna help boost your app/meet people and network. It's even worth taking a gap year if you're unsuccessful at them, doing some work experience, and then reapplying.

So I would just recommend Cam, UCL, LSE, Warwick and then one other whatever you want.

Would really help to already be getting some insight days/other finance experience on your CV, check Trackr for pre-uni events, it is crazy out there but best of luck haha.

Also worth strongly considering degree apprenticeships

Honestly, if you’re aiming for high finance, Warwick Econ is a very sensible choice. It’s one of those courses that’s consistently seen as strong academically and well regarded in finance circles.

With your predicted grades and GCSEs, Warwick definitely isn’t unrealistic. It’s competitive, but you’re not stretching wildly. A lot of people targeting investment banking see Warwick Econ as a core option.

The course is quite quantitative, which tends to help for finance roles later. It also has a reputation that holds up well, especially for internships and grad roles.

Hi there,

Your post demonstrates some great qualities, making for a great application! You can find out more about studying Economics at Durham using this link: https://www.durham.ac.uk/business/courses/economics-l100/. You'll be able to find information about modules, assessment and years abroad/placements.

You can read about a real student's experience studying Economics at Durham here: https://durham-student.org/economics-at-durham-less-scary-than-it-seems/, to get a first-hand feel of what it'd be like.

As for your choices, I'd recommend that you take a look at each university's programme and see which you enjoy the most (in terms of module, contact hours, opportunities). You could also check out their accommodation, societies and more to see which would align best with what you're looking for - at the end of the day, it's all about which universities you'd enjoy for the time you'd be studying there. 😊

I hope this helps,
-Rosie (DU Representative)
