Cambridge Churchill offer

Hi, I have received an offer today for MML at Cambridge after being pooled to Churchill from Trinity Hall. Would love to hear from anybody who has also received an offer from Churchill, particularly for Humanities as I hear we are in the minority! Also a bit annoyingly my offer is A*A*A despite the offer usually being A*AA and this being my predicted too. Any ideas why this might be, maybe I didn't do as well as they'd have liked me to on the admissions test or something? Also any general info about Churchill would be appreciated as I have not visited before.
Thanks!

Hi! The exact same just happened to me. I was pooled from Johns HML to Churchill MML so i was very shocked and confused lol. My offer is also a star a star a which is crazy!! but same as you i have never been to churchill or even considered it really so i have no clue if im going to accept it because its a different course. also the college being 70% STEM is sooo off putting like it feels like there are no tutors/academics for arts and humanities

Churchill is a really nice college. It’s very down to earth and my favourite thing is the community is lovely, yet we’re also really hard working and ambitious (we have the second highest Nobel prize winners of all Cambridge colleges despite being one of the newest ones! Only 1 away from drawing with Trinity!).

I’m a STEM student but most of my friends are humanities students here. Churchill was originally founded to be a sort of equivalent to MIT in America and that’s why they have their STEM focus, but it has really moved on since then (despite I know the percentage difference). There’s about 130 in my year I think, so still about 40 humanities students at least. The supervisors for humanities are still excellent don’t worry you don’t get neglected! I have seen some humanities friends (not MML specifically) have supervisions at other colleges with expert supervisors there so if Churchill can’t provide one you will still receive high quality teaching (+get to see another college!) But because we have a really big dining hall and cafe and a few social areas there’s a lot of mixing of subjects.

Otherwise some things about Churchill: we are the largest college by land in Oxbridge. Lots of green space and lots of sports facilities like tennis courts, football, rugby, netball, basketball courts, dance studios, squash rooms, table tennis etc all free to book! Also a 24/7 free gym only for Churchill members - the main uni gym is £32 a month so I’d say this is a great perk. Formal hall you aren’t required to wear the academic gown (which is about £50) but you can if you’d like. We’re called a ‘hill college’ which basically means we’re not in the centre but it’s about 20-30 min walk to centre or 10-15min cycle max.

I wouldn’t overthink the A*A*A - try your best to achieve it if you accept your offer. Churchill is known for giving higher offers generally and sometimes 4 grade offers, so it’s unlikely a representation of you and more what they want this year.

Is Churchill at all lenient on results day? I would be so disappointed if I got A*AA and missed the offer but could have got in had i happened to have been pooled to a different college. Or in the case of that could I be moved to a different college on results day?

Omg nice to hear I am not alone lol. That's rough about the course, I didn't know they could do that, I've heard from my friend about Oxford changing from history and politics to just history but not heard Cambridge doing this before. I totally agree with you about the 70% STEM being slightly daunting - do you have any idea how many MML students there tend to be per year?

I just got pooled for Classics to Churchill, I'm pretty sure Churchill as a standard set higher grades for all offers but then give more offers out.

I don't think so; this is what's said on Churchill's website: "On average, this approach [giving higher entry requirements] allows Churchill to make a relatively generous number of offers per place each year. However, it also means that our requirements are usually a little more rigorous than the University’s minimum offer level and that we rarely depart from them, allowing our offer-holders’ exam outcomes to be decisive in whether or not they are ultimately admitted." Implying that they probably won't be lenient.

It’s case by case. My friend had this where needed A*A*A (min requirement for the subject) and missed by 1 mark. They got called the next day and offered the place. Before that they had an email asking for them to send their results and that they’d be considered within the next 24hrs for Churchill or another college. Churchill came back and offered them the place.

So there is a slight chance but obviously not guaranteed.

The online / in person offer holder days or emailing admissions would probably be best to ask more on this though

Hi, I received an offer for History at Churchill yesterday after being pooled from Sidney Sussex! My offer is for A*A*A which is also higher than the university normally gives - it says on the college website that they often do this as they give out a higher number of offers so then limit the amount of people who will get in on results day (which is kind of terrifying!) It is nice to hear from someone else hoping to do humanities at Churchill

Hello! Lovely to meet another Fitzwillamite (question mark 😂). And congratulations on getting into law btw, all my friends who were doing law were always saying how competitive it was.

What subjects do you do? All the best meeting your offer sure you'll all smash it.

I'm so excited I finally get to be a part of offer holders and being a fresher (soon x) because I got my offer in the ARP last year so I'm on a gap year this year.

I did Advanced Highers (from Scotland) Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Pure Maths. I did do a Gold CREST as well which was kind of like an EPQ but not marked by the SQA (exam body) just an additional thing like a supercurricular in AI in Medicine.

My offer is for Med, maybe I should have led with that lol

What's your EPQ in?

Tysm. That's such an interesting EPQ title - well best of luck with it and with ur A Levels.

It's always been amazing to me that the EPQ even exists, I was so sad to learn they didn't exist in Scotland so had to get creative lol.

Hopefully I'll see you at Fitz in October 😁.

Yes that would be amazing!! Do you think you’ll go to the offer holder day?
