Best northern unis for history & politics?

I'm searching for northern universities for history, politics or both, predicted BBB at A-level, and keen on great student life. Which cities or unis should I check out? Are there big differences in experience up north? Cheers for your help!

Hi!
Not sure how qualified I am to actually make recommendations for universities, especially because I haven't been myself, but I live very far North and know alot alot of people who went to some around me.
Some universities I have heard that are very good for history and politics are the University of York, the University of Lancaster and the University of Manchester. But be careful with mixing up the University of York and York St Johns. The campus at York St Johns is lovely, but the University of York is ranked higher academically and more recognised by employers! Additionally, the university of Lancaster is known for being very good for social sciences and humanities, it being one of its strong suits. I've heard overall positive things about it, but i'd recommend asking attending students. Lastly, the University of Manchester is definitely a strong suit, although less Northern than the others, but is regarded very highly by employers and also overall has brilliant reviews for social sciences, humanities and student experiences!
Edit; For cities, i'd recommend checking out York, Leeds, Manchester, Lancaster and Newcastle!
I wish you luck for you searches, I hope this helped a little?

Maybe have a look at Keele? Fits your predicted grades and I know someone from my school who went there (I forget what degree she did though) and she seemed to really enjoyed her experience there

Hi there,
I study International relations and politics at Liverpool John Moores University. The course here is ranked 7th nationally (in the Guardian 2025 guide), and we also have very positive national student survey data. Where we rank 3/88 universities on assessment feedback and guidance, and 5th in teaching quality. LJMU has a range of societies, including a politics society, debate and model UN- all very related to your course! Also guaranteed accommodation for first years!!!

In terms of cities, Liverpool is very affordable compared to say, Manchester. We have loads of student deals and great nightlife!
Although the North does have many great cities and universities, including Manchester (MMU and uni of), Liverpool (LJMU or uni of), and Keel, Lancaster and many others..

I hope that helps. Any further questions, just reply back! And good luck!
