Higher History or Higher Politics

I’m picking my subjects in late February for my Highers and I’ve mostly figured out what I want to choose, but I’m still stuck what to do for my 5 higher.
Currently I take mostly sciences, English, maths and history, but I’m wondering if I should take higher history or higher politics next year?
I want to go into something to do with science so really either doesn’t really matter for uni or jobs. And I haven’t picked modern studies or know NOTHING about politics lmao, but it does interest me.
I’ve got an A1 in my history prelim and in my English one if that matters.
So I’m asking for some help, in terms of studying, content, revision, and difficulty.
Which one should I consider taking. Any advice would be appreciated!!! 😛

Hi. I currently take Higher history and Higher modern studies. I'm predicted A's in both of them.

Firstly, having looked at past papers and understanding standards, the essays in Higher politics seem to be of the same/similar difficulty to those in modern studies. I obviously can not comment on the content though. I've found the essays in modern studies to be much easier than in history. They're just generally easier to learn the structure of, you don't need to write as much, and I think they're a bit easier to memorise.

However, history essays aren't horrible, either, so long as you listen to your teacher. Having achieved an A1 in your prelim, you're in a good place for doing Higher history. Paper 1 is essays, of which you learn a minimum of 8 but write two in the final exam. You have two essay topics: Britain and a world topic. Then, paper 2 is the Scotland paper and is made up of skills questions like at nat 5. There are less skills questions than at nat 5, but they're a bit harder and worth more marks. I think that having done national 5 both the essays and the skills questions aren't too difficult to learn and get used to. If you know what topics your school does for Higher history and they are the same as mine (democracy in Britain in the 19th-20th centuries, the Treaty of Union, and USA 1918-1968).

History is more revision than modern studies, but maybe that's because I studied a week in advance for my history prelim and crammed for my mods prelim, so it just felt like it was more work revising for history.

I hope this helps you make a decision, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊
