Psychology or economics 4th A level

I am currently in year 11 and
predicted 99999998888. For a level i'm planning on doing biology, chemistry, maths, and either psychology or economics + an epq. I hope to study medicine in the future and I am very interested in psychology and I feel like it links to medicine and compliments my other subjects well. However, I'm thinking of taking economics incase I change my mind and want to go into finance instead. Do i take psychology or economics as my fourth a level?

A fourth A level I think is always very extreme, especially with bio chem and maths, I do these three and currently it is a lot of work but manageable, I know most people doing four a levels at my sixth form have dropped the forth unless its further maths, to maximise their grades. However if you're sure it's right for you obviously go ahead! psychology you might find easier to manage the workload as it will have lots of links to biology content and if you find it interesting it would definitely help you keep motivated, so I would perhaps go for that one. Do you need economics a level to study finance?

Do you have to take 4 a levels?
Doing 4 a levels plus EPQ is the workload of 5 a levels and then you have to do your med application stuff (ucat prep, get high grades, volunteering, work experience etc), its really not worth it unless your school makes it compulsory. Econ isnt needed for going into finance, further maths would increase your options in this field and is more suitable to be taken as a 4th subject. If you enjoy psych then you can take that if you need to do a fourth subject or aren’t sure about one of the other 3. Chem and maths are both tricky subjects and bio and psych are both content heavy, you dont want to take on too much!

For EPQ you shouldn't be doing 4 a-level subjects, only 3. Taking bio chem and maths is a great combo already, and if you want to do medicine/psychology then do EPQ alongside those 3 subjects; psychology is too specific as a subject and bio and chem pretty much covers what you need to do medicine at uni, and econ for backup finance is great however seeing as 3 of your subjects are already medicine-heavy, if I were you I won't go into too much trouble for picking an essay-based subject that can't complement your other 3 subjects. EPQ from my understanding would be really helpful for especially psychology, as it gives you research and other skills to implement in university and jobs, so it's helpful from that point of view. Hope that helps!

This is so helpful, thank you! How are you finding bio chem and maths and do you have any tips for them?

If I stay at my current school for sixth form then yes, I will have to take 4 alevels. I've thought about further maths as it does make the most sense as a fourth a level. However, I'm not sure if I like maths that much so I'm worried I might not enjoy it. Thanks for your help!

I love them, I couldn't have picked a better combo for me as I am not an essay person haha. Definitely a lot of work but if you actually put the work in you will be absolutely fine. I would say after each lesson make a summary sheet/flashcard using a youtube video/save my exams/other spec specific resource and then do exam questions on the topic, I made sure to do this every lesson and am doing well 🙂

Hi!

First of all, those predicted grades are amazing! well done!

Those A levels sound like a great choice, especially as you are wanting to go into medicine!

Regarding which A level to pick, it is obviously your own decision at the end of the day! I have had personal experiences with psychology A level as it was one of my A levels which I completed and am now doing at degree level- So I may be slightly biased towards Psych haha!

More specifically, I did AQA Psychology, I really enjoyed this course as it covered many different areas of psychology! I would agree with you that it would compliment with the other subjects which you are choosing- especially with biology and maths. For example, you will likely look into the biological perspective of psychological processes and maths is used throughout psychology in different respects. As well as this, it could also link quite closely and help you when writing your personal statement as it demonstrates that clear interest in people-focused medicine. This could be very helpful for your future self!

On the other hand, economics is also another great choice! As like you said, it keeps open more pathways. It is also a very useful for aiding in developing analytical and essay skills! This is obviously a very useful skill. However, I wouldn't be worrying about limiting your options at this stage as if you are wanting to go into finance (possibly) then there are many different routes that will be able to get you there without having to take economics A level.

At the end of the day, your A levels are your own decision! I would also just be weary about overloading yourself though as all A levels are very content heavy. This is just something to bear in mind when picking your subjects!

Hope this has been helpful!
