Is it too late to pick up further maths A-level?

My school makes doing an EPQ mandatory for students who aren’t taking 4 a-levels and I’m honestly not finding EPQ engaging for what I intend to do in the future. My previous school didn’t run further maths so I didn’t even consider it as an option for me but I’ve realised how easily I’m going through Y1 normal maths so I was considering dropping EPQ and taking Further Maths but I feel like it’s too late to join. People have said that their classes have already finished the Year 1 content and I feel like I could catch up but I really wanted to hear other people’s opinions. I did do further maths gcse and got a 7 if that sways you any bit. Also my school does EPQ during yr12 and 13.

There's quite a lot of content in year 1 further maths, I honestly don't really think it would be possible to catch up. It's different from normal A level maths in lots of ways and every topic is like a new topic whereas in A level maths it is just adavanced than GCSE maths. Especially the exam questions are highly difficult in further. It also takes loads of practice if you want an A or an A* like twice the work you put in for normal maths. Realistically if you want like an A, I wouldn't advise you to take it now. But if you are fine with a C or B, then you should take it.

Honestly I don't think so:frown: alevel maths is kind of like gcse maths just a little step up, but further maths honestly feels like a whole different subject lol. for 99.9999999999% of people this def isn't something you could catch up on after missing the first 5 months

You could try to self-teach CP1, CP2, FM1 and FD1 in the summer holidays. 🙂

I would ask your school.
Each school has their own policies. They may say it is too maye, but you dont know until you ask.

In my opinion, there is a much bigger jump from A-Level Maths to A-level Further Maths than there is from GCSE to A-Level Maths. My class has also nearly finished the Year 1 curriculum for Further Maths (although this may be partly down to the fact that there re only two of us in the class and we are both proficient in maths). As many other people have said, A-Level maths is mostly just an extended version of GCSE maths and GCSE further maths with only a few new topics whereas every topic in Further maths is new from GCSE. However, I don't know you and what you are individually capable of so I would recommend speaking to teachers at you school to get their opinion.
