second year housing or commute?

guys please help me out!
im a first year student at bath, currently searching for second year housing. i would love to live with my friends however, my family's financial status isnt the best right now thus it would be better either if i commute (i live 1.5hr away by bus) or request for university owned housing just for my second year.
i would love to stay in uni accoms for my third and fourth year as well as i can still have a good social life being in bath still + pay less than private housing in the city which will help my family out hugely, but i dont have any health conditions that allow me to obtain help from the uni in terms of accomodation so im not sure if im even eligible for them.
ps i pay international fee still so housing is a huge burden
what can/ should i do?
Hi there!

I am a current third year student at Bath and although for me personally I didn't really have commuting as an option (around 4 hours away from home) I do have some friends who commute so I can offer some advice. There are plenty of student who do commute to the university and it cuts a lot of cost down. I think it is definitely doable but there are also factors things like timetable and early mornings, missing out on spontaneous nights out. Also in total the journey of your total commute is 3 hours everyday so this is something to consider as well.

Have you had a look on the financial support that the university can offer? It might be able to help with things like deposits should you go down that route. The SU Bath website also frequently posts job adverts which you may look into- to earn a little pocket money to support yourself in the years to come.

I would say private housing can become expensive especially during the winter with heating bills and water. Most of the places to rent in Bath are quite expensive and many landlords wanting minimum 12 month contracts. You could always query about university housing with Reslife and the accommodation team but have a realistic plan in place should it be rejected like either commuting or finding private housing further away from the city centre.

I would say don't get pressured into private housing and if you end up commuting- it is not the end of the world as if you were going to go on a night out maybe some friends may let you stay the night. Plus it will mean you'll prioritise getting your work done on campus and then being able to associate the city with socialising.

I hope this helps!
