University choices, help needed - Meng Mech eng

Hi, im a year 13 and currently have offers from; Warwick, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Manchester.
At the moment im considering Liverpool and Sheffield as my choices but having a hard time deciding on where to go.
For context, i live in the wirral (15 mins away from liverpool) and im predicted (A*A*A) in maths further maths and physics.
Im struggling to decide as i loved uni of liverpool and didnt mind sheffield on the open days.
I know sheffield ranks higher but at liverpool i felt more at home and like its where im meant to be.
I also discussed this with an engineer in industry and they said uni location doesnt matter as much as the degree itself.
I also like the fact uni of liverpool is closer to all of my activities such as muay thai and jiujitsu.
One of the pros to sheffield is that the accomodation at true student is cheaper.
any advice appreciated )

Hi @danhern00,

Sounds like you’ve really taken time to think through your options, and whilst rankings can be helpful, feeling comfortable often makes a big difference to your experience! Being close to your activities and network can help you maintain a healthy balance alongside your studies. You could consider attending an offer holder day or getting in touch with current students to get a real feel for the atmosphere and student life.

If you’re looking a bit further south, Royal Holloway offers a strong range of programmes in engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science, with a focus on research-led teaching and practical experience. The campus community is known for being supportive and close-knit, which can make settling in easier if you value a friendly environment.

Ultimately, the best choice is the one that feels right for you and a place where you can thrive.

We hope that helps, and good luck with whatever decision you make!

Best wishes,

Honestly, since you already have an offer from Warwick, I’d give it serious thought. Warwick is very strong for Mechanical Engineering, and with Maths, FM and Physics, you’d fit the course well.

Also, Coventry is really close to Birmingham, so you’re not as cut off as people think, and there’s still plenty to do nearby.

In terms of reputation and long term value, Warwick is usually seen as a very safe choice for Mech Eng, but feeling at home matters too.

Hi,

While I study at LJMU rather than UOL, I can definitely say Liverpool is a great student city. Since you live on the Wirral, it’s worth thinking about whether you’d prefer commuting or moving out. A 15-minute commute could save you a lot of money, but if you chose student accommodation, Liverpool is still generally quite affordable compared to many other cities.

Liverpool is very diverse and student-friendly, with plenty to do outside of studying. The Albert Dock has the most stunning views, and there’s a great mix of food spots, art galleries, theatres, live music, and football. We’re also not far from beaches which is a plus. Staying close to your Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu activities is also great to balance alongside your studies.

While Sheffield may rank higher and has cheaper accommodation options, feeling “at home” somewhere is really important, especially for a challenging degree. As the engineer you spoke to mentioned, employers often care more about the degree, skills, and experience than the exact university or any rankings.

It may help to ask yourself where you realistically see yourself being happier and more motivated day-to-day, that can make a huge difference to your overall uni experience.

Hope this helps, best of luck with your decision!
