University options mpharm

Hi all, I hope everyone is well! :-)
I want to ask people on here since I don't know anyone who has experience in picking universities in areas far away from home, or has knowledge in pursuing pharmacy or stem.

I am unsure if I should be considering the closest universities (to Cambridgeshire) if it cheaper to find accommodation rather than taking public transport. I don't want to go back up to the north of England since I recently moved, but I want to know which unis have cheap cost of living/accommodation, good student life/ support, and a nice diverse area. I know that place with all these factors is unrealistic but I'd like to hear peoples experiences.

Currently I'm in year 12 so I'm not looking to apply, but I am looking to go to open days and tours within reasonable distance. If anyone has any advice, uni recommendations, and personal experience, please share.

The best tool i have come across for this is unifrog so if you have access to a unifrog account then definitely look at the uk university shortlist on there. You can filter by area, diversity factors like disability, student support etc. If you do not have access to unifrog then you can find course info on ucas and use their filters.
Hi there,

I am current third year pharmacy student at Bath and I am from the North West of England. When I was initially looking for universities, the UCAS website was pretty good in listing a lot of information like grade requirements, accoms info so definitely make an account as that is where you will submit your university application.

In terms of location, it really depends on the university you choose - for example campus or city university. At Bath we have university organised accommodations for 1st year students then in the future years you spend living in the city.

I would say cost of living can vary from place to place so it's worth looking at average rent, grocery prices and transport. It is also worth looking at different bursaries and financial support that different universities can offer to help support you.

You're in a great position being in year 12 to be able to go to open days, speak to current students and explore the city. As pharmacy is a 4 year course, you need to be able to envisioning yourself living in your chosen city. Other factors you might want to look at is the night life, things to do, ranking, placements, assessments, how well students do on the GPhC exam.

Good luck and I hoped this helped!

Hi there,

My name is Elmehdi, and I am a final-year Medical Science student at De Montfort University. I believe I’ve come across a university that offers exactly what you’re looking for: affordable accommodation, excellent student support, and life in one of the most diverse cities in the UK.

De Montfort University really stands out to me because of its strong student support and its location in Leicester, which is widely recognised as one of the most diverse and affordable cities in the UK. The cost of living is relatively low, with student accommodation costing around £140 per week including bills.

Leicester is a lively and vibrant city, with plenty of food spots, parks, and things to do. Bradgate Park, a beautiful and popular outdoor space, is also nearby. The city’s location in the Midlands makes it very accessible, with easy transport links to major cities such as Birmingham, London, and Cambridge.

De Montfort University is particularly well known for its Pharmacy course, which has over 150 years of teaching experience within the School of Pharmacy and is HCPC-accredited. Students benefit from placements at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, one of the largest hospitals in the Midlands with over 1,000 beds, offering excellent clinical exposure.

The Pharmacy course at DMU is competitive, so I would strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Best wishes,
Elmehdi

Hi @Rain_e

It's great to hear that you are already starting to look at unis!!

I moved away from home (in the north of England) to Kingston!!

I might be biased but I really like it here and find it the best of both worlds being just outside central London making it more affordable, yet you still get to enjoy everything that London has to offer.

I will link a few previous posts I have made that should help give you an idea of what it is like here

I also have friends here that study mpharm and really enjoy it. The course has accreditation and includes placements throughout.

Let me know if you have any questions I would be happy to answer
