How does student accomodation work outside of term time at cambridge?

I am not a cambridge applicant, nor an offer holder, but my partner is. Home life is incredibly difficult for him, and as far as i know he would rather not have to go home every half term, but from what i remember cambridge students cannot stay in their accomodation outside of term time? Does the university have any safety nets or alternative accomodation for students who cannot return home? or can they just continue to pay for their accomodation outside of term time and stay there?
Any help would b greatly appreciated!

Many colleges will give the option of staying during the Christmas and Easter holidays if you're willing to pay the rent. Some colleges are more flexible than others. Mine (Sidney Sussex) was very flexible and I always kept my room over the holidays just because I didn't want to move all my stuff and I liked having the option of coming and going as I please. Others may let you do the same but only for a few rooms around college.

If you have a good reason, like having a difficult home life (also if you are doing research in the holidays), then colleges are much more likely to be flexible. Similarly, care leavers can have access to accommodation 365 days a year.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! is the rent you mentioned the same price as the typical weekly acomodation fee, or does it cost more outside of term time? My boyfriend has an offer from christs, but i noticed that they have rooms to hire outside of term time, so i was curious if it would affect how much it would cost for students!

At Sidney, if you signed the 39-week license at the start of the year, then it was always the same weekly rent as normal and was guaranteed for the year.

If you signed the 30-week license, you could request to stay later in the holidays but it wasn't guaranteed and up to availability (this was basically never an issue for Christmas and Easter and I don't know anyone who has ever been refused). There used to be a slight surcharge but this was done away with a few years ago so now it continues at your previous room rate.
