Further Maths A-Level

I am currently in year 12 studying maths, further maths, physics and history. Is it worth doing a further maths as level this year even if i’m pretty certain on continuing with the full a level? My school have offered me the choice, and even after the AS i can continue with the full a level but I know it will be very stressful and not many people in my class are doing it. Could anyone help please? Thankyou!

Hi, I am taking further in year 13 and I most definitely reccommend you taking AS further to be completed next year, just the amount of formulae and methods you have to learn that are not touched on in A2 definitely make doing AS worth it. For example, all those vector equations for planes and what not will are not part of A2, proof by induction is not part of A2, and the list goes on and on and on.

The only counter-argument I could think of is if you do not think you can get above a 90 percentage uniform mark and get A* predicted which would hurt your chance at oxbridge next year. If you were not thinking of applying oxbridge, if you can't get A in AS, definitely do not take it, B is around where A* in regular maths looks better alone for Unis afaik.

Good Luck!

What kind of degree are you aiming for?
What kind of grades are you getting in further maths atm?
You could always do it because you might end up dropping fm in year 13 as the jump from year 12 to year 13 is massive so a lot of people drop fm then.

Which papers are you studying? If it is FM1 and FD1 then you could, otherwise continue to the A-Level.

Hey I’m aiming for a Maths degree. I’m currently getting close to full marks on all my pure assessments and getting As, however sometimes i do drop down on stats but I know my weaknesses and how to improve. And yes this is why I think i’m going to do it, if i do drop it next year I won’t have to sit an as alongside my actual a levels, and it will also make me extremely confident on all the AS content. However, I am thinking of applying to oxbridge, and worst case scenario I get a B and I don’t get a predicted A*. But I’m pretty certain I can get an A.

Okay thankyou. And yes, I’m considering Oxbridge and this was my worry too. Although I am consistently getting As on many of my class assessments I’m worried I will just mess it up and a B will be really damaging.

I think sitting the AS is a good idea then, cos then even if you drop the a level later you will still have the AS level formally.

If you want to do a maths degree, then id go for the full a-level.

Then sit it, since FM1 is very easy and FS1 has the easier topics too that are not in A-Level but only in AS-Level. 🙂
