University of Southampton?

hi.
I got a conditional offer from southampton Malaysia campus, for the 2 + 2 MEng mechanical engineering programme. Its significantly cheaper than going to the UK directly. Is it worth it? The website says the degree is the same, so will I have any problems?

Hi @sandhanitizer,

I wanted to see if I can offer you some reassurance and advice.

This is a deeply personal decision, as it would see you studying in Malaysia for two years before coming to the UK to study here for two years, but from the university website I can see that at the end of the course you graduate with the same MEng degree regardless of where you started. This is because the content and structure of the course is identical to the UK programme. And at the end of the degree, you'll graduate with a degree from University of Southampton.

The degree is also accredited to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, so you'll graduate with the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status as well!

So I think this comes down to is it worth it for you?

A few things to have a think about -

Would you enjoy spending two years in Malaysia before switching to the UK?

Finances - would it suit you better to have a lower overall degree cost? What impact would this have on your overall experience of university (if any)?

Research labs and facilities - is there a UK facility you'd want to have access to early on in your degree?

Check all of the terms and conditions of the 2+2 degree to make sure you'd be happy with these.

Think about your long term goals i.e. career goals.

I hope this helps,

Bea

Just to confirm, are you a home (UK) fees student or international fees student?
