GCSE Grades for Medicine

Hi,
I was thinking of doing pharmacy but after some thinking im considering Medicine.

I got 88887777666 at GCSE. The 8s in bio, chem, geo and French. 7s in Physics, maths, English LIT and Religous studies. The 6s in English Language, DT and art.

I know that a minumum 6 in Language is what most medical schools ask for, but im worried it won't be competitive enough.

Im doing bio, chem and geo for A-Level and hoping for AAA. I also have work experience set up in a pharmacy, I also volunteer at a dance school and a cooking club.

I don't see any reason you couldn't apply to medicine if you wished. I would probably suggest avoiding GCSE heavy medical schools (e.g. Cardiff, Oxford) and focusing on those with just minimum GCSE requirements that don't score GCSEs (e.g. UCL, Imperial) or those where they only score a fixed number of GCSEs or weight them less, but provided you apply strategically (which you should be doing if applying to medicine anyway) it's certainly a possibility.

I'd recommedn trying to get some work experience in a caring role/healthcare environment other than in a pharmacy as well as your pharmacy work experience, so you can get a better idea of what working as a doctor vs pharmacist would be like. I believe the working environments can be quite different? So that's probably going to be the big decider for you so you can pick the one that best fits your preferences for a career

Thank you! I'm trying to get some volunteer work at a hospice (Long-term), I tried to get hospital work experience before but I didn’t get much luck in my area

You should be fine you will just have to apply strategically and to places not like Cardiff which only go by all 9 GCSE’s. HYMS could be a good one as they take only your top 6 GCSE’s into account or other unis like Bristol that only take into account ucat scores. What area are you in because I also really struggled but managed to get a few emails and happy to share if you’re local.

Try the smaller local hospitals and emailing them directly like minor injuries units and things like that or you could try emailing or phoning consultants that your intrested in. Other things like radiology departments aswell are always good and I found less competitive and easier to access
