University of Nottingham vs University of Sheffield

Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I had asked a question similar to this, but after hearing back from all the universities I applied to, I am unsure of which would be the best decision. I currently hold 3 offers: University of Nottingham, Sheffield and Lancaster, for the physics with astrophysics course. The rankings in the The Complete University Student Guide are 14th, 16th and 9th respectively.

I have narrowed down it down to between Sheffield and Nottingham, but I am unsure of which would be the better decision. I live in Leicester, so both unis are not as far.

Would anyone have any advice or points to note?

Also, would anyone recommend considering Lancaster? I feel that since it has only risen in the university league tables recently it is not as reliable?

And would anyone know if the course closures at Nottingham would have an impact on other courses such as physics?

Thank you all!

Hi there @vinnie_mad ,
It's great that you have done your research and have three offers to choose from 🤗! Aside from university rankings, it is also important to consider if the university environment is the right fit for you 🙂 If you have not already done so, I would highly recommend going for any Open Days or Offer Holder days to clear any of your doubts or questions you may have with current students or academic staff on the course 🤗
Do these uni's have any connections with particular companies or interesting industry projects you are keen on working on?
Are there any particular societies or facilities each uni has that interest you?

Heyy @vinnie_mad,

First of all, congratulations on your three offers! While I’m not a physics student, hopefully I’m able to give you some insight into Lancaster.

One thing that Lancaster does better than bigger city unis is the student experience side of things. Because it’s a smaller, campus-based university, Physics students tend to have:

Smaller lab and seminar groups

More direct access to lecturers and supervisors

A more supportive academic environment, especially in first and second year

Furthermore, Lancaster offers a calmer, more focused environment in comparison to city unis. While this is not for everyone, but it’s definitely not a disadvantage academically. If you get the chance, I’d really recommend attending an offer holder day at Lancaster before ruling it out, a lot of students change their minds once they see the department and campus in person!

I’d also recommend signing up to Lancaster’s Unibuddy platform. It lets you chat directly with current students who are studying Physics with Astrophysics, so you can ask honest questions about workload, teaching style and student life etc. This can be really helpful when comparing Lancaster with your other options and getting a clearer sense of what the day to day experience is actually like.

If you have any questions about the university or campus life more generally, feel free to ask 😊

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offers!

You're definitely not the only one struggling with a decision! In terms of general advice for picking between universities, I would highly recommend going to the offer holder days. Sheffield's offer holder days are in late Feb, March and April, so I would definitely recommend coming along, as it will give you a chance to speak to students studying this course, and they will be able to give you the most accurate insights. I went to my offer holder days and then made pros and cons lists of each uni, which really helped me see things clearly.

They will also give you a chance to explore the cities and accommodation, and get a feel for the area if you haven't been already, which is really invaluable when choosing where to live!

However, choosing a university ultimately depends on what you would consider a priority. There are a lot of factors to consider outside of just the course, whether its student life, accommodation, extra curricular societies or getting outdoors (which Sheffield is great for!), so if you have any specific questions about life in Sheffield, please feel free to get back in touch - this will likely help you to choose.
Best of luck with your decision!

Hi @vinnie_mad ,

I know I am not Uni of Sheffield, but I just thought I could give you some insight into what Sheffield is like from a student's perspective! You have got some great insight into the course itself so I just wanted to share a bit about the city itself.

In general, Sheffield is a great city. There are loads of students here which makes it really fun for a night out, or just going into town in general. We have great places where lots of students live, such as Ecclesall Road and Crookes where many people live in their second and third years (and beyond) and they both have places to eat, shop and go out which is always fun.

Nights out here are fun too - we have West Street which is where many students will go for a night out and it is always busy along here which is fun and most bars are free to enter too so you can go between them! There are also lots of other good pubs and bars in the centre and dotted around the outskirts too, as well as the student areas.

We also have a lot of greenery in Sheffield which is nice and of course the Peaks on our doorstep. I love getting the bus (or one of my friends will drive) to the Peaks as there are so many nice walks to do and I love to get a pub lunch after, or even just a pint. We also have Endcliffe Park, the Botanical Gardens and Crookes Valley Park all very close to uni and the student areas. Even in the centre of town we have the Winter Gardens which are lovely and a nice bit of peace and quiet in town.

It is also fairly inexpensive to live here and Sheffield has been named one of the cheapest cities to live as a student. There are lots of deals and just the rent itself is not too bad in comparison to other places.

No matter where you choose, I am sure that you will have a great time! Uni is so fun and any place out of your options sounds great.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hello @vinnie_mad!

I would strongly encourage you to visit both universities in person if you can as you do not live far from both. By doing so, you may be able to get a better picture of how the institutions operate in a normal day. Likewise, it is also worth visiting them to see the cities in general so that you can check things like the public transport options available for commuting, the amenities surrounding the universities, etc.

In terms of the suspended courses, none of the Physics courses are expected to be withdrawn for 2026/27.

All the best,
