Regretting my A level choices

Im in year 12 rn and im doing politics, bio and psych for my a levels, initially i wanted to do psychology at uni but i want to switch to philosophy/ppe. Rn im hating my a level choices, i like politics and im fine with keeping bio but i really want to swap out psych with either maths/french or philosophy but i doubt my sixth form would let me and idk what to do

Could you ask your sixth form if you can sit AS Levels in your current subjects at the end of the academic year, then basically start Year 12 again next academic year with the subjects you want to do?

Really you have a couple of options here:

Put up with your subject choice for the next year and a half

Ask to switch and see if you can come to an agreement (offer to take some class tests after youve caught up on all content independently) but youve missed half a year of content so this will be tough

Repeated year 12 next year with different subjects. You will not have extenuating circumstances for this so it may be looked down upon by top unis btw

Start self-studying a different subject on your own time and take it privately or during a gap year if you need it for entry

You basically need to enquire about switching and if its a no then seriously consider whats worse: doing a subject you dont like for 16 months or spending a year longer before uni.

you should at least ask! i take philosophy (the philosophy of religion and ethics, but it's still close enough) and love it! yes, you'll be a behind on content, but it's worth an ask. plus, worse comes to worse and you can always retake your first year - a surprising number of people i knew did this, actually.

Hi,

If you’re really disliking your A-level options, it would be worth discussing this with your personal tutor and subject teachers as soon as possible. If you’re able to come to an agreement, some sixth forms do allow subject changes, as long as you’re willing to catch up on the content you’ve missed, although this can be harder if a few months have already passed.

If changing subjects isn’t an option, another route could be retaking Year 12 with your preferred options and is common.

Alternatively, you could stick with your current subjects and still pursue what you’d like to study at university, as long as you meet the entry requirements. Many courses value strong grades and transferable skills rather than specific A-levels.

It’s definitely a good idea to get advice now as the earlier you explore your options, the more choices you’ll have.

Hope this helps,

Thats a bit more reassuring as I thought I would have a less competitive application due to my subject choices !

It always an option to self-study A-Level Maths with Pearson Edexcel since it has the most resources and is the most popular in the country too. 😀 lol

Also, A-Level Maths is not too difficult, just ask the Maths department for eBooks or paper copies of the following;

Pure Maths AS Year 1,
Pure Maths A-Level Year 2,
Statistics and Mechanics AS-Level Year 1
Statistics and Mechanics A-Level Year 2

Dr Frost,
ExamSolutions,
TLMaths,
BicenMaths,
HindsMaths,
...and Woody on Udemy

...as well as several other maths tutors offer free videos and resources on their YouTube channels and websites all are brilliant.

So many people get A* and A grades whilst self teaching A-Level Maths with YouTube, Udemy and Dr Frost. 🙂

Try starting in the summer holidays.
