Medical School

Got an offer from Dundee yesterday and an offer today from Aberdeen to study medicine. I don’t know how to decide between Dundee and Aberdeen!!! I love both of their medical schools campuses and both scrubs look cute but what sets them apart? Does anyone know what the cities are like?

I’d be moving from Edinburgh for reference. Travel journey time doesn’t bother me.

Also I was so excited getting my Dundee offer but when I got Aberdeen I don’t know why I didn’t show a dramatic reaction? Is this normal? Dundee was my first medicine acceptance and I was relieved knowing I can actually go onto be a doctor. So I guess for Aberdeen I wasn’t as scared as I knew I already had a medicine offer?

Thank you!!! And good luck to all other med applicants with mocks and prelims!!

Congratulations!

Medicine curricula are mostly the same therefore unis won't differ much academically. Maybe you could let your personal preference decides. Your excitement in getting Dundee's offer might be an indication of your personal preference. If Dundee was not your most favourite, you might've felt "relieved" rather than "excited"?

Anyway, good luck in your medical future.

Hello! Congratulations on getting into Dundee and Aberdeen, this is a great position to be in.

I have friends at both Dundee and Aberdeen and from what I gather Dundee is a lot more academic and the medicine curriculum is a bit more well ronowned across the UK. The previous post is right that it doesn't strictly matter if you just want to become a doctor, but if you have any aspirations about teaching or research I would say Dundee is better as they have more SSCs (student selected components) and they are integrated with the local teaching hospitals. They also have a spiral curriculum which is where they revisit things taught in year 1 again in year 2, etc. Rather than doing it all at once.

My friends who went to Aberdeen were mostly attracted there because of the sports facilities, apparently they are great if you play any sports, etc.

Do some more research on the websites and if it's not too much travel consider going to an offer holder day as well to get the feel for them as well.

All the best deciding x

Is Dundee not good for sports? Sports is the thing I look forward to the most apart from the knowledge gained from med, Dundee is my only offer now being rejected from Aberdeen and Edinburgh but if Dundee can’t provide good competition /physical opportunities I would consider taking a gap year cos I totally flunked all my interviews this year and don’t want any regrets or less opportunities.

I will be honest I'm not sporty so this isn't something I have researched at all.

I have sporty friends at both Dundee and Aberdeen, but I would say Aberdeen is more renowned for sports than Dundee - although I would do your own research.

Turning down an offer from medicine is not a decision to be taken lightly, there's no guarantee you'll get offers again on a gap year so I don't think you should discount Dundee just because it's not as famous for sports as another uni.

All the best x

Yeah I geuss I’ll have to do research, and if at the end of the day this is what I’ve got I’ll take it because lowk I don’t want to study for the ucat again and take unnecessary stress , thanks.

Hey! I live in Dundee and have a sister in Aberdeen. I definitely would say in terms of activities and doing things Dundee has much more compared to Aberdeen. However, they are both much more chill cities compared to Edinburgh and Glasgow. I may be biased because I live in Dundee but I definitely think Dundee is the better city. My sister who lives in Aberdeen says its a little gloomy too lol.
