What does your role as a Student Ambassador entail?

Hi everyone,

I thought it would be helpful to share what we each get up to as a student ambassador to give those considering it more of an idea of what the role is like from uni to uni.

For me some of the following jobs I have worked as a student ambassador are ...

- Of course TSR!! I log on here every week to respond to all of your questions and write these posts.

- Open days. These are one of my favourite events to work at as I get to speak to lots of potential students, also a great way to make friends and catch up with current students/colleagues. Plus, there is usually free ice cream, brownies and other treats to enjoy on shift! Here I have worked doing campus tours, welcome desk and check in.

- Higher Education Fairs. For these events I travel to different sixth forms and colleges in the London area to speak to the students and answer their questions about Kingston and university. I found this especially great in first year as it was a good way to explore London. It was also fun to meet ambassadors from other uni's there

- Welcome week / Freshers. There are lots of ways you get involved when new students join both in September and January. I have helped students move into accommodation, been on welcome desks, given campus tours and worked welcome events.

- Graduations. Another favourite as it is such a nice day to see everyone graduating and help them celebrate their day by giving directions, taking photos and making sure the events run smoothly.

- Assessment centres. Level 5 students get great experience of what a job assessment centre might be like with mock interviews, group tasks and presentations. As a student ambassador I helped at these events by firstly helping students get to theevent by guiding them on the bus and to the location. Then throughout the day giving directions and answering any questions they may have.

Share below what you get up to!

Hey! This is a great breakdown of the role.
I’m also a student ambassador, and while my experience covers a lot of the same ground, it’s cool to see the slight differences in how we do things. I’ve been an ambassador since my first year, I think, and it’s honestly one of the best ways to get involved with the uni.
To add to Grace's list, here are a few other things I’ve taken part in:

Open Days & Visit Days: I love being able to share my own honest experience of studying my course to help them decide if it's the right fit for them.

Clearing Advisor: This only happens during the summer during clearing season, but it’s easily one of the most rewarding shifts. I work the phone lines to help students secure their places, being that reassuring voice for someone on results day is a great feeling.

Subject-Specific Events: I help out at events tailored specifically to my department. It's a bit more "hands-on" and lets me dive into the details of the modules and assignments I've worked on.

Feedback Festival: I’ve also helped out with events focused on gathering student opinions. It’s all about making sure the student voice is heard and helping the uni improve the overall experience for everyone.

If anyone is on the fence about applying, I’d say go for it! The confidence you build is massive.😊

Hi there,

This a great post for student ambassadors to get involved with as it's nice to hear what we are all doing at different Uni's!

At Coventry we work some similar shifts, I do a lot of online work for TSR and also Unibuddy working in the communities feature and direct messaging for people who visit the website and have questions.

Again we also work the graduation, open days and clearing like you guys!

Some of my favorite shifts though I don't think have been mentioned so far are..

STEM specific Tours and School visits
As I am a STEM specific SA i often give school visits and tours around the facilities, and attend workshops with groups for a whole range of different schools and ages. It's fun to introduce them to the uni, the subjects and sometimes learn something new!

Calling Campaigns
We often get the opportunity to take part in the calling campaigns for prospective students, checking if they have questions, inviting them to open days and events ect..

Marketing and Social Media
Advertising the uni through social media shoots ad videos for the university is always a fun way to get paid and can be interesting for prospective students to see the experiences of current students.

I really recommend the role, its an amazing way to learn about the uni, help new students and spread the word about your experiences whilst makin some money as a part time job. It has also definitely helped my confidence and person skills!

Hi Grace!

I have enjoyed reading everyone's answers to this so I wanted to add some of my favourite jobs I have had as a student ambassador!

The student room! This is my favourite job as a student ambassador as I enjoy reading everyones questions and seeing what I can say to help them.

School visit days. I like helping out with these as it is so fun to see people coming to Hallam for the first time and remembering what it was like when I was at school and I went on trips to different universities. It is different every time which I like and we often get involved with all of the activities which is fun too.

Graduation - I helped out a lot this year at Graduation which I really enjoyed and it was so nice to see everyone excited on their big day and see a lot of the behind the scenes which you normally wouldn't see as a student who is graduating.

Photo and video shoots are also fun and I have enjoyed being a part of these types of campaigns in the past as it is just a bit of something different.

We have also had opportunities to be Hercules the Dragon which is our Hallam mascot as events such as varsity and graduation which is really cool and a fun thing to be a part of too!

I would echo that everyone has said here that it is really worth it so I would always recommend going for it.

Hi everyone! 😊

It’s really interesting reading what ambassadors do at different unis, so I thought I’d share what being a Student Ambassador at LJMU is like.

Like everyone here, I do The Student Room, as well as apps like Unibuddy, where I chat to applicants, answer questions, and create posts and blogs. I really enjoy the content side of things, especially writing about student life, societies, accommodation, and what Liverpool is like as a city. I love sharing my favourite cafés, study spots, and must-see places in the city.

I also work a lot of open days and applicant days. These are always good fun and involve a mix of roles like meeting visitors at the train station, helping at registration and merch stands, and giving campus tours. And there’s always free hot drinks and biscuits which is a bonus!

We also have subject ambassadors who help out with course talks, as well as outreach work in schools and colleges. Some ambassadors even get to travel for events. I’m very jealous of the ones who get to go to Belfast for our Northern Ireland applicant days!

There are also opportunities to get involved with social media and content creation, like videos, blogs, reels, and takeovers that show what student life at LJMU is really like.

To anyone considering becoming a student ambassador, I’d say go for it! It’s a great way to earn a bit of money around your studies and meet lots of new people.
