Psychology wider reading

Hi, I'm a year 12 student who wants to study psychology at university and I am looking for recommendations for wider reading. I have already been suggested 'the journey of becoming a clinical psychologist' and the aspiring psychologist podcast. I would also like some advice on how I would include this in my personal statement and how important it is for the unis I'm considering. For context I would like to become a clinical psychologist in the future and the universities I am considering applying to are:

• St Andrews
• York
• Cardiff
• Loughborough
• Exeter
• Kings
• Durham
• Warwick
• Sheffield

I am not a psychologist nor have I studied that course, but if you choose upon psychology as a career you are very likely to encounter a lot of patients with existing mental health conditions and it would be useful for you I think to have an understanding or awareness of these. These books cater more toward medicine rather than straight psychiatry but you might wish to look at:

Psychology and sociology applied to medicine
Psychiatry at a glance

Both should be available second hand for not a long of money and they will give you some oversight as to where psychology and medicine overlap and how they complement each other, giving you insight into where your own role fits in.

Your ps will be far more interesting if you just find topics that really interest you within psychology and then find articles, books, courses, podcasts, webinars etc on those topics. That way youll be able to link everything together and actually make points about what you found interesting or agreed with and apply it to your studies and aspirations.

Psychology is an academic course, so things about being a psychologist aren't relevant. As has been said before, think about topics that interest you and read or listen etc to content related to those. That could be mental health if clinical is something you like
