What are T-Levels and what do they involve?

T-Levels are 2-year courses which are taken after completion of GCSEs. They are broadly equivalent in size to 3 A-Levels.

The courses are available at selected colleges, schools and other providers across England. If you need more information, please read here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/providers-selected-to-deliver-t-levels

T-Levels are courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and education providers so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for entry into skilled employment, an apprenticeship or related technical study through further or higher education.

Here is what T-Levels involve:

Technical qualification which includes core skills, theory, and concepts for the industry area

Specialist occupational skills and knowledge of the career

Industry placement with an employer

Minimum standard (grade 4 or above) in GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English, if students haven’t already achieved this

How are T-Levels assessed and graded?

Assessment:

Technical qualification

Assessed through externally set and marked exams and an employer set project. This tests core knowledge, concepts and skills relevant to the industry area.

Occupational specialism

Assessed through externally set and marked practical and synoptic assessments. This tests the specialist occupational skills and knowledge required for a specific career.

Industry placement

Assessed on a complete or not complete basis. Students must successfully complete a minimum 45 day placement with an employer to achieve the T-Level.

Grading:

Students who complete a T-Level will receive an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction* and will be awarded with a nationally recognised certificate showing a breakdown of what they've achieved. It will also confirm that a student has met the minimum requirements for Mathematics and English qualifications.

The T Level certificate includes:

Overall grade for the T Level, shown as pass, merit, distinction or distinction*

Separate grade for the core component, using A* to E

Separate grade for each occupational specialism, shown as pass, merit or distinction

It also confirms that the student has:

Completed the industry placement

Met any additional mandatory requirements

Student’s overall T Level grade is worked out from the grades they achieved on the core component and the occupational specialism(s)

Students who do not pass all elements of their T Level get a T Level statement of achievement which shows the elements they have completed.

T-Levels are included in the UCAS Tariff. Here is how it reflects:

We're just checking this attachment, please wait...

Please bear in mind that the above UCAS Tariff points are for the overall T-Level grade, not individual elements of it. You may find the following calculator useful to find out exactly where you stand in terms of UCAS Tariff points: https://www.ucas.com/applying/before-you-apply/what-and-where-to-study/entry-requirements/calculate-your-ucas-tariff-points

Universities and colleges have been provided with a range of information to help understand the skills developed as part of a T- Level. If you do not achieve the full T-Level qualification, but have achieved either the Core or Occupational Specialism, you may still be accepted by your university or college.

Are T-Levels the right option for me?

T-Levels are an excellent choice if you prefer practical, work-focused learning over pure academic study and want a direct route into skilled employment, apprenticeships, or university.

Please bear in mind that you will require a minimum standard (grade 4 or above) in GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English.

You may also access a T-Level foundation year which is a 1-year post-GCSE level 2 study programme designed to support progression to, and success on, a T-Level. It’s aimed at students who would like to do a T-Level but would benefit from additional preparation and support before starting one.
The programme gives students the opportunity to study technical content aligned to T-Levels and develop their English, maths and digital skills, alongside work experience and personal development.
