A level choices: english lit, biology, chemistry or drama (+ spanish)

Hi, thank you so much for reading this

I have to choose my A-levels by next week for school, and I really really need help choosing.

I am definitely taking Spanish and I've narrowed the other options down to: English lit, biology, chemistry and drama. I am predicted 9s in all of them

I don't know what career I want to go into / what uni / etc, but I think maybe I'd like to go down the science route?? Again, I really don't know.
If I only take one Science would that make getting into a uni for medicine / science / something like that impossible?

Also would you say that, as you have to analyse texts in Spanish at A level (my school does AQA), its the same as english lit and therfore I shouldn't take it??

And then also Drama - would you say this is a useless A level??

Thanks again for reading this, any advice at all would be so helpful, especially if you take one of these subjects.

Yeah, I don't know how to end this just... thanks so much and bye

Hi there!

While I'm not particularly good at giving advice towards essay/language/artistic subjects, I can give some of my thoughts for the science route (particularly Chemistry - it's my passion!)

LOTS and LOTS of people take Biology and Chemistry for medicine, and it seems like you are contemplating to follow suit. If you want to apply to medicine, Chemistry A-Level is almost mandatory for all medicine courses at university - Biology is highly recommended, but isn't actually strictly required. So, if you wanted to only do one science to do medicine, you could pick Chemistry and leave the other two (or three) slots open for other subjects, depending on what you want to pursue.

Here's the drawback. I also know lots of medicine aspirants that take Chemistry A-Level. It's one of those courses that are extremely important, but also extremely tedious if you happen to not have an interest in the subject. In Chemistry A-Level, things are more logical and intuitive than GCSE - but also part of it is memory. As contrasted to common misconception, the maths isn't actually that hard - I would say the maths in Chemistry are about grade 7 GCSE Level, except for logarithms and natural logs - these are more A-Level-esque, but they only come up near the middle of Y13 (Arrhenius Equation, pH and pKa, buffer calculations etc.), so it's ok to NOT like maths and still do Chemistry.

You can definetly do Chemistry as a science... but it would be infinitely easier if you LIKE the course, and not just take it for the sake of medicine. (which is what a lot of people do. frankly, sometimes it works out - but sometimes it just becomes too mentally challening.)

For Biology, there's quite a lot of content to memorise. The topics aren't strictly interelated throughout the course as well, so there's going to be a LOT of flashcards and revision that need to take place if you want to do well. It's different from Chemistry in terms that logic isn't as clear-cut, but having a good mental map of where everything lies in the course, and finding connections within topics definetly helps out.

It all comes down to your interests, aspirations for university, and skillsets (the way you think is important). Anything else, feel free to ask! I'll answer to the best of my ability

If you want to do something science related then id do biology and chemistry.
Biology chemistry and spanish. A language is always a good subject to take.
What are you like with maths?

Firstly, if you're allowed to pick 4, definitely do that and then you can try more subjects out before dropping the one you least like when you get to 6th form. I do Biology Chemistry French and I love having French as a very different subject that makes my studies seem a lot more varied. You can definitely apply to medicine with only Chemistry but it will leave your options for uni a lot more limited and you may risk not getting in/struggling as you haven't done biology. Chemistry and biology will leave you open for most science degrees but also so will just chemistry on its own.
Overall, I think it's important to do what you enjoy and find interesting as well as finding a future career! Maybe talk to your teachers and careers advisors and see what they think as they know you.

Don’t take English bc like u said ur still analysing texts in Spanish. I think 2 sciences will be stronger for stuff like medicne but if ur js leaning towards one science then i think drama will be fun - while drama won’t help with a science application it’s good because its a lot of fun and the subject where u can let loose

Having 2 sciences is really helpful if youre considering the science route. I think if youre struggle to choose between stem or humanities you should start with 4 (if allowed by your school) and then drop one when youve decided which you like best. This can also be an advantage if the teaching in a particular subject isn’t great at your school or you just decide it’s not really for you 🙂
English lit and Spanish are very different subjects, they have very little cross over so I wouldn’t worry abov that.
Drama isn’t useless, aside from sciences and languages, many uni degrees dont require particular a levels so that’s why drama and humanities can be viewed as less useful than sciences and maths.
I do bio so happy to answer any questions on that!
