The Student Room Group

advice needed!!!

hi, im a student in year 13 currently studying a level biology, chemistry and maths.

ive applied to these courses below on ucas, and have gotten back 4 offers (apart from qmul, still waiting on their decision):
psychology at roehampton
psychology and cognitive neuroscience at roehampton
psychology with neuroscience with foundation year at middlesex
psychology with neuroscience at keele
biological sciences with foundation at qmul

to be perfectly honest i was never really happy with these choices (apart from maybe qmul) as i always had my eyes on pbs at cambridge, but ofc my predicted grades (BCC, B in maths, Cs in the other two) stopped me from doing so.

infact my predicted grades are likely overestimations of my academic capabilities given i achieved a D in bio and maths, and a U in chem in my november mocks. i dont really know what to do about that anymore considering i think im still at that same level from november. my next mocks are in march and i dont think ill be able to improve much even if i give it my all now

my gcses are also pretty average:
8 - physics
7 - maths
6 - eng lit
6 - chem
5 - bio
5 - eng lang (resat this in 2025 and got a 4 :/)
5 - history
5 - spanish
4 - pe

is there any way for me to somehow drag myself up to 3 A* by june with my current grades? what would i have to do in each 3 of my subjects to significantly improve them?

if i do somehow miraculously getting 3 A* in august i plan to reject all my places on ucas, essentially taking a gap year and apply to cambridge (and other top unis) for 2027 entry. but again this depends on me getting those grades first, and i really dont have much time left.

if i dont end up getting the grades i want in august, then i guess ill just end up going to one of the unis listed above (provided i meet the entry requirements). however i dont think id ever truly be happy knowing what couldve been had i tried harder

please please please any advice would on this would be greatly appreciated

Just try your best! Lmk if you need any revision resource recommendations or have any questions on Bio and Maths (i can tag someone who does chem too if youd like 🙂 )

Bio resources: studysmarter for flashcards, revision crash course on primrose kitten, cgp flashcards are awesome, cognito notes, seneca for recall practice, pmt for exam style questions.
The general revision cycle for bio is understand, apply, memorise. If youre struggling to understand a concept try drawing it out, create a mindmap, writing a description in as few words as possible or teaching someone else. Once you understand a concept you can apply it to past paper or exam style questions, this gives you an idea of the types of questions you will be asked on that specific topic- make sure to read examiner comments and the mark schemes fully. Recall practice is just so everything sticks in your head- stuff like blurting, seneca, flashcards etc are best for this. Understanding question types and command words is really helpful for exam tech too.
Resources for maths: TLMaths and BicenMaths on youtube, pmt for practice questions, madasmaths for practice questions, integral and drfrost are really great sites
For maths you need to do pretty much the same thing as bio: understand, apply to practice question and then memorise what you did. Some types of questions can be quite repetitive so make sure you read the mark schemes are youre clear on what youre expected to do.
@Trickia can you help with chemistry?

Hi, I'd say use the free resources in PMT and find past paper questions and do them every day
By the way..you might want to resit your Eng Lang exam because if you want to go to Cambridge it's best to have a 6 or above

Mmm I'd say if you want to make yourself seem more competitive- Cambridge did mention they don't have any entry requirements for GCSEs but most successful applicants have a large amount of 8s and 9s and a 5 in Eng Lang doesn't look the best.. but since you did get a 5 it shows you have the potential to get a 6 or above if you revise for it further, and the 4 is likely to be an anomaly as we all mess stuff up from time to time. But yeah I would say it's worth trying again but it's not a definite rejection from Cambridge if you don't (assuming your predicted grades have improved and that you get at least an AAA in your a levels)

hmm ill consider it, although i do want to focus on improving my other 3 as much as i can. i highly doubt my school would let year 13s resit gcses they already had an additional attempt at in year 12.. but tysm for ur advice!

Hi! (not sure which exam board you have but I do OCR A)
My advice for chemistry is this:

1.

Ensure you know your spec -> aka the content
If you don't use teachers, friends, TSR and other online resources e.g. YouTube. If you do OCR A I reccomend machemguy if AQA allery chemistry
Also make sure you know all your mechanisms, conditions, reagents etc

2.

Then it is constantly exam paper practice - this is technique and learning & understanding what the mark scheme requires. Learn from mistakes & mark schemes to improve. For exam technique use your notes to help as you aren't testing your factual recall but rather if you know what vocab to include etc

3.

When answering questions make sure you answer appropriately and watch out for the correct units e.g. Pascals not kPa etc and that you have rounded to the correct or appropiate number of Sig figs etc . Maths errors are the most common! When I mean appropriate I mean when a questions says e.g. Explain why the boiling points of x,y,z differ -> key word is 'explain' is different to 'compare' the boiling points of x,y,z

All the best xx

Hello,
Right now the most important thing is to be realistic but focused about jumping from D/D/U to 3 A* by June , but you can still make big improvements if you switch to an exam-focused routine immediately. Maybe aiming to study 2-3 hours outside of school (short but often study sessions help alot). Spending time doing past paper questions, marking them carefully and learning from the mark schemes.

they would definitely let you resit as many times as you want as long as you're paying for it it's just if you're 18 now they don't require you to, if the school doesn't allow you to just do it outside school
