Canadian Student - UK University LLB

Hey guys, great to meet you all,

I assume there’s plenty of posts like this out here, but I’d appreciate some help. I’ve just decided i’ll be going to the UK for an LLB, however I’m struggling trying to know the general consensus and thoughts about the universities.

I’d like a city with a good student life, and a good nightlife scene if I ever wanted to go out, not every night but occasionally. I’d also like if it was closer to London Gatwick, but that’s not a necessity. My average is around 90% in all U level courses.

I know a few people who went to Kent University, but it doesn’t seem appealing to me, old and dead from what i’ve heard and seen. My choices that i’ve discovered are as follows:

* University of Leeds

* University of Liverpool

* Manchester Metropolitan University

* University of Bristol

* University of Nottingham

* University of Sussex

Thanks!

Bristol would be my pick! It's got an amazing nightlife, is an hour and a half from London by train and has a strong academic reputation.

Hi, current UWE Law LLB student here. I 100% second Bristol as where to go for student & night-life. As well as the train, there's also a National Express coach service between Bristol & Gatwick Airport via Heathrow Airport.

You've got UoB on your list, but I'd also recommend taking a look at UWE as well. There is a large international student community here, particularly in the Law School, and last year I actually lived with a guy from Canada who was on a year abroad. I study at Frenchay campus, which though it is less central than where UoB is based (mainly Clifton), it takes 15-20 minutes to get to Bristol city centre by Metrobus, and the M1 is 24/7 now. The Law school also offer a number of extra-curriculars to boost skills & employability, such as placement years, Pro Bono schemes & skills workshops. If you have any questions about studying Law at UWE, I'd be happy to answer.

In terms of your other choices, I've heard mixed reviews about the University of Leeds, it seems like there's quite a gap between the best and the worst departments, and I don't know where the Law department falls into that. Manchester & Nottingham are great student cities, with the former having a particularly great reputation in the UK for its nightlife. Though I did look at & apply for university in Brighton, where the University of Sussex is based, I didn't get to visit, and it looks to be a rather expensive place to study. Liverpool also seems to be a good student city, but as it's near Manchester I'd probably choose to go there instead lol

Hey thanks for the reply! I’ve practically made my choice and it’s going to be Manchester, just seems to work out the best. However i’m still looking at Bristol and i’ll take a look at UWE. How expensive is the city? Compared to let’s say, Manchester or Leeds.

Hey @HBash22,

Great to hear you're coming to the UK for your LLB and you've got Manchester Met on your list! Manchester is home to over 100,000 students, so it goes without saying that there's absolutely loads to do around the city! One of the best ways to get an idea of what life is like in the city is to speak with a current student via our Unibuddy platform! We have students on the platform from a wide range of different courses who can tell you more about life as a student both in and outside of the lecture theatre. We also have a wide variety of content from current students that can give you a great look into what's on in the city. To get started chatting to one of our students, you can visit: https://www.mmu.ac.uk/chat-with-us-unibuddy.

Best of luck with your decision! - Louie 🙂
