YSJ Accom

I have just got an offer for my MSc for York St John!! Really excited- wondering where is best to look for accommodation? It seems like a tricky place to find a private rental? Is there a Facebook page or anything?

Hi Zazzy,

Rental in York can be difficult but I know of a few agencies that cater towards student houses. I personally rent through Sinclair, but IG Properties and Adam Bennett are some other options. This save the student page has an overview of the agencies operating in York as well as contact details, so might be of use! https://www.savethestudent.org/letting-agents/york

Facebook also has some groups, for example I see a lot of individual rooms advertised on the YSJ freshers page run by our SU, but I'm not a big user of Facebook so I can't give you many details I'm afraid.

Good luck with your MSc and house hunting, hopefully we'll see you in York soon

Thank you! I did speak to someone at the open day but I will ask here too since everyone has a different experience- when is the right time to apply or start asking for rentals? I'm reluctant to rush into anything especially with strangers, but student housing is crazyyyy ahaha I am really hoping to find nice people to live with too

Wondering the same thing about asking for disability support too if that's something you know about! With both things, I'm literally just accepting my offer now, and I'm worried it's a bit intense to immediately be jumping in. But needs must?

I know it can be super overwhelming at first with getting everything set up, so you're doing well to be thinking about it already!

In my personal experience, the sooner you can arrange housing the better. This gives you time to look through everything, and also if you come across any issues during the process it means you're not rushing to sort through them. If you're looking to move into a shared house, finding some options now also means you have a bit of time before you have to commit to get to know the other tenants and work out if you're compatible as housemates. I personally applied for my second year housing in October of my first year, which worked out well for me and my housemates. However, I know some people have waited until April/ May and still been able to find housing so you still have some time to find the right place for you.

As for disability support, the team can get very busy in September with so many new students starting, so if you're able to, getting registered before starting is definitely a worthwhile option. This webpage has some more information about what support our team can provide as well as a link to an online form you can use to register, you'll just need either a student number or application number. https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/student-support/disability-support/
I know it's different for everyone, but in my experience the disability support at YSJ is very comprehensive and the team are all lovely, so I'm sure they'll be happy to help you get accommodations set up even though it's still a bit early.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!
