Durham college choices

What colleges would people recommend for me? I'm definitely going self catered and I'm not fussed over whether formals are gowned or not, but I'm just not sure which college to pick. I'm doing history and european languages, so obvs would probably need to walk a while from most of the hill colleges. Is it worth picking st cuths and hoping I get self catered?

Hi there!

Choosing a college is a tricky decision, but it’s good to know what you want to prioritise. In terms of picking St Cuthbert’s, if it is your top choice, I would recommend putting down, but be mindful of the Durham college allocation process. You can read more about this here : while the admissions team will try to take your preferences into account, your top choice is not guaranteed.

I would advise exploring other colleges that meet your criteria, those of which would include John Snow, South, Butler or Stephenson. You can read over student experiences in these colleges, for instance John Snow or Stephenson to get insight into student life here.

Another thing to remember is that Durham is generally a very walkable city, meaning it’s quite easy to get from place-to-place. There are also various bus routes to accommodate students, making transport quite simple.

Ultimately, I would advise to rank your preferences honestly, but be open to getting an alternative pick! I didn’t rank my colleges, and was allocated St Aidan’s, which I now believe is one of the best - no college is a bad one, it’s all about what you make it. ☺️

I hope this helps & let me know if you have any other questions.
