Second degree?

I am currently undertaking a foundation degree in health and social care, however I aspire to go on to study and qualify as an OT, this is where my true passion lies.

However, I am now worried I will not be able to do this due to a lack of funding ( OT masters was my 1st plan), as I understand that you can only have 1 degree paid for. Can anyone tell me what my options are realistically, should i quit this foundation degree before completing and move to OT or is it possible to get funding for a second degree?

Hi there,

Do you only have one year of study so far? When would your new course start and would it be a full time undergraduate course? Can you confirm what university you will attend, the full name of the course and how many years does the course last? You can get student finance for an undergraduate course and then a postgraduate course because it is a higher level of qualification.

Thanks, Drew

Hi, yes only one year so far. My new course would start this September or next September if I complete the foundation degree. It would be a full time undergraduate degree, BSc(Hons) Occupational Therapy at UCLAN lasting 3 years.

My understanding is that if I were to do a postgrad/masters then I could only get £12000 total to cover the entire course tuition and no maintenance loan, is that correct?
Thank you for your help

Hi Dreamsandwishes,

Occupational Therapy is an Allied Health Professional course, therefore if you are not already qualified in that field, you should be eligible for funding as long as you meet all other standard eligibility criteria.

Thanks, Clare

Sorry for the confusion, please ignore that message.

Just to pick up on what Clare said, Occupational Therapy courses are exceptions, so you'll normally be entitled to funding regardless of your previous study.

Masters funding works differently, that's true: though do you know if it will be classed as a Postgraduate Healthcare course?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi, thank you for your reply. I do not know what it would be classed as as I am finding it difficult to find accurate information on how funding works. So If I were to compete my foundation degree, (2 years of maintenance and tuition), I would still be eligible for the full 3 years of Maintenance and tuition for the OT course?

Hi there, yes, you can complete the foundation degree, and then apply for the Occupational Therapy course, as this is an exception course, that will not take any of your previous study into consideration when applying. Stephen
