disability allowance

I'm slightly worried that I won't get support from my university choices, as I'm currently going through a diagnosis of a long-term health condition, but i don't know with the NHS system if I'll get diagnosed before I have to apply for DSA. anyone have any advice?

I'm also waiting for DSA.

I know (as one of my friends has done this) sometimes university can pay for a diagnosis for you so you can DSA in September and can give you support, contact your uni/s disability support early to explain the situation. But I don't have a clue if then you can apply later or something to DSA but it would be ready for next year. Contact them and maybe they may know.

Do you have a past record/ past medical records and having AAOs from your sixth form/college in a SENCO maybe?

Good luck 🤞

It’s quite possible to get a working diagnosis from your gp. SFE are aware that waiting lists for Autism and adhd can be taking 4-5 years.

If you give a dsa disability evidence from to your gp and ask them to complete it and confirm you are awaiting a diagnosis for the above that will hopefully be approved.

Equally if you are awaiting a physical condition’s diagnosis, your gp could put the symptoms on the form or ‘back pain’

Best of luck

Hi @EmilyJayneW

The DSA is flexible, you can apply for it whenever you get diagnosed, not just for the beginning of an academic year. I would say it's really worth getting in contact with the unis you are applying to to see what support they can offer you. For example at UEA, you can get access to reasonable adjustments without a diagnosis (you can complete a screening for neurodivergencies and have a note from a doctor about you being on a waiting list for medical condition diagnoses), and the disability advisors can help you with the DSA application process to make it easier.

I have been through the DSA application process and I get support from disability services at uni, so please let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!
