Sixth form choices for business and marketing degree

Hi, I’m thinking of doing business and marketing, preferably at a good uni (Bath, Manchester, Southampton).

I want to do business studies and economics A-levels and a Btec in Creative iMedia Production.

Some people say universities don’t like business studies and economics together, so should I do the Btec or go for another academic a-level, eg I could do physics, but I don’t want to because I don’t enjoy it.

Has anyone got into a good business course with the business studies and economics combination and a Btec?

I’m predicted 9,9,9,8,8,7,7,6,6 in my GCSEs

Thank you everybody

Hi there, It’s really positive that you’re thinking ahead about subject choices and how they fit with the type of business and marketing degree you want to study. At London South Bank University, we welcome a wide range of qualifications and assess applications holistically based on the UCAS tariff points you achieve and your overall readiness for the degree, rather than strictly on specific subject combinations. For example, the entry requirement for our BA (Hons) Business Management (Marketing) programme is 112 UCAS points or equivalent Level 3 qualifications. This can come from A Levels, a BTEC National Extended Diploma, or a combination of these, as long as you meet the tariff and you have five GCSEs including English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above. This means your planned mix of Business Studies, Economics and a BTEC like Creative iMedia can certainly contribute towards meeting the entry requirements for this course if the combined UCAS points are sufficient.

We accept equivalent Level 3 qualifications such as BTECs for Business Management and Marketing pathways and recognise the skills and practical knowledge they develop alongside more traditional academic subjects. The flexibility in entry means you can apply with a BTEC combined with A Levels, and the personal statement you write about your motivations and experiences plays an important role in showing your commitment to the subject area.

You are always welcome to explore LSBU and get a real feel for what student life is like here. We have a Southwark open day: Saturday 7th February 2026 where you can hear more about our courses and support. If you would prefer to see the campus in person you can book a tour https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days on a day that suits you and get a sense of the spaces you would be studying in. You can also chat to our current students https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat to hear honest experiences and get answers to any course questions you might have.

It's not advisable to do BS and Econ.

What about Maths A level?

Hi there 😊

It's great to hear you're thinking ahead already and know what you want to do at university.

Here at Bath we offer Business and Management with Marketing course which is really popular and a few of my friends really enjoy it!

Below is listed what the prospectus for both courses entry requirements.

"Our entry qualifications should demonstrate a breadth of study through subjects that show both essay-writing and numerical skills. Examples of numerical subjects could include Mathematics, any science, Economics, Psychology, Statistics or Geology. Examples of essay-based subjects could include Business Studies, Economics, English Literature, Politics, Psychology, Sociology or Religious Studies.
If you study qualifications such as A levels, you will ideally have one subject in each of the above categories and a third complementary subject relevant to this course. Some subjects, such as Economics or Psychology, could be counted for any one of these categories. Examples of relevant complementary subjects for BSc Business could include Accounting, Geography, Law, Media Studies, Philosophy or Sociology."

If you are still unsure, feel free to email [email protected] and you'll get into direct contact with the admissions team to advise you further.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask further questions if any

Hi @Jayne1008,

It's an exciting time to be thinking about your college/sixth form options! 🥳 Best of luck.

I know you've had some really great answers below, but I wanted to answer from a Southampton point of view as well.

Having checked the entry requirements for our Business Management course which has modules in Marketing, I can see that we're happy to accept combined A Levels and BTECs. There's nothing in the entry requirements as of this moment which mentions not being able to do Business and Econ together either.

However, I can see that Southampton would like to see a BTEC in "Business, Marketing or Enterprise & Entrepreneurship.Other BTEC qualifications in subjects other than Business may also be accepted if taken alongside A levels or other academic qualifications. Please contact us to check if your qualification or subject is accepted."

If you'd like to find out if Creative iMedia Production would be accepted, please feel free to reach out to our enquiries team: [email protected].

If you have any more questions, tag us and we'll get back to you as soon as possible!

The tech is a good idea but not business and econ together. Econ is more open and allows u do do more so I’d say swap business with something else. Maybe geog, English, languages js whatever u want

Do you mean level 2 FMaths [it's not a GCSE]? You can't judge A level against that!
