You need to have a conversation with your parents. The government expects them to cover the shortfall between what you are awarded and the maximum loan.

Get them to have a read through the following article:

Hi @xbrooke.lowe. I completely understand you worries and it is very valid for you to be stressed. I can tell you that you are not alone in this. My advice would be that often cheaper accommodation that is either private or shared, particularly ones with bills included given that they are usually much more reasonably priced and better than halls which are more expensive. I believe having a part time job can certainly help! I would also recommend conversing with the student support team at the university's accommodation.

Hi there!

I’ve been in this situation before, it isn’t fun- i totally understand how you feel! As other commenters have said, look into private student accommodation options. In some cities/universities, privately owned options are cheaper than the accommodation offered by the university. Alternatively, you can look into house shares. A lot of people won’t do this until second year, but it can definitely be cheaper than student accommodation.

In terms of earning money, make sure to look through your universities scholarship options, and apply for as many as you are eligible for! There may also be grants etc that you’re eligible for.

Your university will also likely have financial literacy support available, with people who can help you with budgeting, as well as helping you apply for things like scholarships and grants, they could be good to speak to as well!

It’s worth thinking about becoming a student ambassador (or similar) too, which will allow you to work around university at open days and other events, and it’s a really great way to earn money on the side!

I hope this helps a little bit, let me know if you have any questions! I can try my best to answer
