What is a viable reason to miss placement?

Im due to have my hospital placement this Thursday (pharmacy). It is only 1 day, but attendance is mandatory. There is a possibility to reschedule, but it's difficult. Ive just become unwell, just a common cold but I'm constantly sneezing and very snotty. I'm not really allowed to miss it, and the attendance policy doesn't say anything about illness. I'm just worried as I'll be in a hospital, I don't want to be spreading my cold around.

Hi @me143

This is a viable reason, having a common cold in a hospital setting contradicts with infection control.
Contact your hospital or facilitator very early on before your placement and inform them of your ongoing cold along with your concern about potentially spreading your cold and harming patients if you show up to placement, then request an alternative day for rescheduling 😊.

Hi,

Even though attendance is mandatory, most placements would consider illness a valid reason to miss, especially if you’re contagious. As mentioned above, it’s sensible not to risk spreading your cold to patients or staff in line with infection control policies. I’d recommend contacting your placement supervisor and university coordinator as soon as possible, explain that you’re unwell, and ask if it can be rescheduled.

Hope this helps, get well soon!
