Honestly, going to China and doing an immersion program was the biggest game-changer for me. I spent three months through a program similar to GoAbroadChina’s and being surrounded by Mandarin all day forced me to actually use it instead of just studying. The first few weeks were rough, but by month two my listening and speaking skills jumped so much. Apps and tutors are great prep, but nothing beats real-world use for fast progress.

I think combining methods is the key—don’t just pick one thing and hope it does all the work. I used a mix of daily Duolingo/Anki, weekly Zoom tutoring, and then a short immersion stint during summer break. That combo kept things consistent and helped me actually remember what I learned. A full immersion program is intense and great if you have the time/ money, but for most people, balancing structured study + real conversations works best.

I tried everything: apps, flashcards, meetups, even a trip abroad, and honestly the “fast” part depends on your goals. If you mean conversational fluency, I found chatting with native speakers regularly helped the most. Programs like GoAbroadChina are cool and super immersive, but not everyone has the funds or flexibility. Even small daily habits—listening to Chinese podcasts, labeling stuff in your house, talking to language partners—can add up fast if you stick with it.
