Midwifery Students - What is your opinion / preference?

Littmann stethoscopes - I understand classic III has a dual sided chest piece and can be used on paediatrics but apparently the sound quality is not as good as purchasing a seperate infant stethoscope alongside your classic III. I know this might be down to preference but*what do you recommend?

Placement trainers / shoes - I know this is down to preference too but are there any placement shoes / trainers you recommend? - I know I need to check the Trust policy for this, I am just asking for recommendations I can consider once I know the policy.

Sketchers seem perennially popular with all nursing teams. Some people prefer posh trainers, Hoka or whatever. Try them on and see what they feel like would be my advice although I would caution that you might want to consider some Toffeln clogs or crocs also because they can be washed or cleaned more easily, something definitely worth considering if you are going to be in midwifery. Maybe both depending upon which environment you are in.

NHS band 7 senior charge nurse Midwife here...

Congratulations on your offer for midwifery.

You don't really need to get a stethoscope as you can use the ones provided by the university or on placement.....
But if you are like myself bought my own stethoscope because I didn't like the thought of using something that was being used by many other people for hygiene reasons.

Littmann is supposed to be the best on the market but you can always get a cheaper one that does the same job and it should last long enough to get you through your midwife degree and hopefully beyond.

----------------------------------------------
Below is what is recommended for midwives and nurses so maybe look around for the same one but at a cheaper price as not cheap 😞 😞 😞

The best stethoscopes for midwives balance acoustic sensitivity for both fetal and adult assessment, with top recommendations including the 3M Littmann Classic III (versatile, durable) and the lightweight Littmann Lightweight II S.E..

For traditional midwifery, a Pinard horn (metal or wood) is essential for direct fetal heart monitoring ( something I would not probably use )...?

So for placement footwear......

Depends on what your hospital trust policy is for footwear as some hospitals insist shoes only whilst the majority will give you options of both shoes and trainers.

Trainers are good as comfortable enough for walking around all day - I would recommend sketchers trainers or shoes.

There's also Clarks as they are just as good for nursing and midwifery.

I wear Skechers trainers as find them very comfortable for walking around all day especially when doing a 12 hours shift.

Just remember that you will probably be assisting in theatre with your patient ( mum to be) if a emergency C-section is required so perhaps ask about your requirements of footwear for working in the operating theatre as you might be okay with wearing your trainers or shoes but they might have a policy that you need to wear the proper footwear in theatre.
