i lied about volunteering experience

for a job to do with domestic abuse and violence I already had on my cv i had volunteered with a help crisis centre that works with children as an email counsellor. I only put that on there because i’ve been trying to volunteer with them since summer but their website crashed so i had to submit my application again and they finally got back to me in jan giving me an interview on the 17th of feb whereas my interview for this job was earlier in feb. I really didn’t think I would get this job so I just used it as practise for interview skills but they offered me the job and want my previous enhanced dbs check from the volunteering company but obviously i don’t have one because my interview is on the 17th. I can’t come clean because I used the volunteering experience to answer questions in the interview so i’m not sure. I’ve used previous administrative experience for one of my references as that had to be a paid role reference anyways and i used my university professor as another one. how do i evade the dbs check stuff? can i just say im not sure i still have it so can we issue a new one? or i can myb say i need to ask the volunteering company which buys a bit of time until after the 17th but even then dbs checks take forever to come. Is there any specific way they can find out I haven’t volunteered with the company yet if they carry out dbs checks or if they even call up the company outside of references?

I am sorry you put yourself in this situation, and I know you won't like my advice but the best is to come clean to your new possible employer, and tell that you are actually interviewing for the volunteering. I wouldn't like to work in place with the possibility of being caught as a liar on my neck. For the future, I encourage you to respect yourself and the others, and be honest about your actual experience.

I knowww i really shouldn’t have done that and i really regret doing it. Do you think I could say I could only start the job by March and by then i would hopefully have already started at the volunteering company, or I could ask them to do the dbs check themselves. I’m honestly fine with them retracting the offer because I do deserve it and in the future I would actually have the experience I lied about to back me up to apply to a different similar role, but I don’t want to come forward yet if there are any other solutions.

Uhm... difficult questions... ask to do the check themselves might raise suspicions on why you don't have it from the volunteering, delaying the start date might be possible, but if for any reason the truth comes out it will be even worse... are you sure you want to deal with that?

A dbs check is for criminal record and volunteering isn’t anything special. It wasn’t a real job that gave you a salary so it wouldn’t even show in tax or p45. Please I’ve been working for over 5 years. Don’t worry it’s fine. Please ignore the other comments. You haven’t done anything wrong. They will not be able to check any volunteering experience, unless you use someone there as a referral. Otherwise use someone you know as a referral for that role

Hi, I encouraged eatmya to never put themselves in uncomfortable position, and come clear as a gesture of honesty and integrity, not in fear of legal repercussion. The DBS check itself is nothing to worry about of course, but it was spurring the discussion weather it was better to be honest about the lack of it from a previous employer or not... I stand by what I said, it is better to be honest and avoid unnecessary stress.

I am very happy to hear that, and I wish you to enjoy and learn a lot from the volunteering experience.
