Withdrawn from the university due to poor attendance in Year 1

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask for some advice regarding my situation, and any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I was withdrawn from university due to poor attendance.
I studied with a Foundation year, which I completed without any issues. Then I progressed to Year 1 (the first year after Foundation), and I successfully passed all my modules.

However, during that academic year (2024), I experienced several health problems that affected my ability to attend classes consistently. I struggled with anxiety and depression, for which I received therapy through the NHS, and I also had medical certificates from my GP covering the weeks I was absent. Unfortunately, due to poor communication between myself and the university, these medical notes were not taken into consideration.

To be clear, I did not miss the entire year in total, I was absent for around 8 weeks.

Now, in 2026, I would like to return to my course and re‑enrol.
I visited the campus and spoke with the administration team. I explained the situation, and they advised me to email GBS (Global Banking School) and also submit an appeal to CCCU Canterbury, their partner university.

I followed their advice: I sent emails to both GBS and CCCU, explained everything that happened, and attached all my evidence. I also explained that I did not submit an appeal at the time because the withdrawal email went to my spam folder I only saw it two weeks later, and the appeal window was only one week. I tried to appeal back then and even sent screenshots of my GP notes, but I never received a response. Because I was not in a good state at that time, I decided to wait and try again now, in 2026.

GBS replied saying that they cannot do anything because too much time has passed (one year).
CCCU replied saying that they do not deal with these types of issues, as they only handle student accounts and minor matters, and that only GBS can re‑enrol me onto my course.

At this point, I am not sure what the correct steps are or what I should do next.
If anyone has any advice on how to proceed, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.

Kind regards,

Looking at GBS's attendance policy it appears that any absence longer than or expected to be longer than four weeks needed to be properly discussed with the right people and that such absences would need approval and a formal interruption of studies. Did you initiate any of this at the time, before you were excluded? I think the success of any appeal you could make - spam folders or not - would probably depend on what you did before they took action and if procedures were properly followed, it's probably less about whether or not there was evidence for the actual absence.

I suppose the only real option you have now is contacting other people at GBS. Anyone who you think might take your side who is not just the general email address or whoever you've been contacting. Your tutor, dean/head of department, student welfare folks, something along those lines, perhaps.

Thank you very much for your response and for taking the time to share your perspective.

To clarify my situation: I had no idea there was any issue until I received the withdrawal email. I had already submitted the final assessment for Module 6, and I had uploaded my GP medical evidence on the portal before the end of the academic year, before the semester finished although it seems they most likely did not accept it. I also spoke on the phone with someone from GBS at that time, explained my situation, and informed them that I had the medical evidence for my absences.

From my point of view, everything resulted in poor communication between us. I was expecting the usual end‑of‑year email confirming that I had successfully completed the year. Instead, I received a withdrawal notice without any prior warning.

Regarding what I did before they took action: all my evidence had been uploaded. After receiving the withdrawal email, I submitted an appeal immediately, but it was already one week past the deadline.

This situation is definitely not easy. I went to the campus in person, spoke with them, and they advised me to contact both GBS and CCCU again. I did that, but the response I received was go to admission and check another option of study.
And this is another issue I’m facing now, I technically passed the academic year and received a withdrawal, but my record still shows that I completed Level 4. Because of this, I cannot enrol on another course at the moment.
Still, you are right I will go back and try to resolve this somehow. It is not a disciplinary withdrawal, first of all. And I don’t believe this withdrawal is final; I’m sure there are procedures that can be followed.
Thank you again for your reply and for offering your perspective.

You could (and, I think, should) try a formal complaint with the institution in question. If no joy with that... Perhaps the Office for Students? This is a really poor situation - on the face of things it sounds as though you did everything right at the time. Obviously there are some reasons for the drop off in the interim period, where procedures for one reason or another (and, in my view, understandably) were not followed. In my view, these reasons are understandable and should be treated thus - many institutions are very bad at this, however.

Do you have anybody there who could fight your corner? I had something like this happen to one of my students and I fought it in the university whilst they pushed from the outside. It was not easy and took a year, but they are now back, completing their programme.

Hello, and thank you for your comment.
I don’t have anyone there on my side; all I have are my medical documents and my explanation. At this point, I don’t really know what else to do. I will try to go to the campus again to see if we can resolve this somehow, because I am stuck right now. I cannot take another course, because that two‑year course, the Higher National Diploma, requires Level 3, and I already have Level 4. My only solution is a reinstatement into the same course, and that can only be done by them. At first glance, it seems like they don’t want to do this, but I know for sure that it is possible. Thank you again for your comment.
