S6 Subject Choices

I am hoping to study vet medicine at university and am currently doing my highers. I am doing bio, chem, English, maths and history and am sitting at AAAAB in my prelims.

I also have apps of maths and physics at N5 both at A.

I need to take 3 subjects in S6 and will be doing biology and chemistry at advanced higher. I am looking at either taking higher physics, crashing either higher RMPS or taking higher politics as my third subject and I am leaning towards physics.
Is a combination of AH Bio/Chem and H Physics too much? I don’t want physics to compromise my AHs which I need BB in.

I’d recommend not picking Physics unless if you are already comfortable with the course at National 5, this is because it is not only developing on new stuff from Nat 5 but also adding a lot more concepts which are kinda confusing. There are definitely overlaps between higher physics and AH Chemistry.

I think overall, if you don’t have to pick it, then don’t. The subject is quite difficult due to the sheer amount of stuff you need to memorise and be able to use, most of my class didn’t do particularly well on the Physics prelim. If you are a quick learner, I think picking it would definitely interesting! Otherwise, I personally wouldn’t recommend it :P

I got an A in my N5 physics exam- 75% to be exact!! My bother is that i feel like because i know i will want to do well, I won’t be able to prioritise the other subjects but crashing a higher would also be pretty hard. Although there is no pressure on me to get an A or B if i were to take it, im so stuck!! Thank you for your advice

I mean… since you did get an A at Nat 5… I believe the jump to higher shouldn’t be THAT much more difficult…
The thing is about Physics is that it is a lot of “base off of previous knowledge” type content. Basically, if you don’t understand the N5 stuff, the higher stuff will look like gibberish :>
I also want to prioritise getting A’s on everything but I’m starting to realise that probably isn’t the best idea, I think physics is just one of those subjects where it is like, “do I really have to take this?”

Higher Politics, in some respects, looks quite similar to Higher Modern Studies, which I take. Having looked at the past papers and understanding standards, the essays seem to be of the same structure as in Higher Modern Studies.

I take Higher History and Higher Modern Studies this year, and the essays are definitely easier in Modern Studies. You don't need to write as much for a mark, the essays tend to be a bit shorter, and the structure is easier to understand.

I'm currently predicted an A in Higher History, so if you'd like any advice/have any questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

Hi, I don’t know anything about Higher Politics, but my friends crashed Higher RMPS this year and I did Higher Physics last year (AH this year). Between the two of them there’s obviously not one that’s absolutely harder, it will obviously depend on whether you’re better at writing essays or understanding often mind-boggling physics concepts. If it were me, I would take physics but that’s because I found higher humanities subjects to be a nightmare at higher, but you might be the opposite of that. I’m sure you’ll have heard about the crazy number of essays RMPS students have to write in an exam, but maybe you would appreciate having some time in your timetable dedicated to thinking in a non scientific way. I took Higher History last year, any my friends who are taking RMPS say that the two subjects are similar in terms of essay structure and skills involved, so if you’re good at history you’ll probably be good at RMPS too.

I will say though, I’m currently taking a vauguely similar set of subject as you are considering for next year, AH physics maths and chemistry, and I haven’t found the workload to be as intense as people made out it would be. It’s obviously a step up, but not unmanageable. Based on your current grades, I think that you would be able to manage higher physics along with your other AHs. Also, I know you’re not crashing higher physics, but my other friend who is doing a similar set of subjects as you did crash it this year and she’s said she’s managing well, so it’s definitely possible.
I hope you find advice that is helpful!

that is very helpful thank you very much! I’m going to give physics a go and if I find it to be “too much” in the first couple of months I’ve been given the option to change it

Heya! (:

I crashed higher physics & psycology in S6, alongside my adv higher chem + art -personally i found the physics + chem combo to be relatively okay to balance, with it being the crash higher i did have a lot more previous knowledge to learn from the n5 but i found the actual strucutre for the exams to be very similar to what i was already used to with my previous biology and chem exams which i think made it a bit easier than my other crash!

generally would just recommend taking whichever higher sounds most interesting for you if your not actually needing the qualification- S6 is great for having that extra year to try something new or go back to another subject you found interesting earlier on in school😊

for my adv higher it did take a bit more work to keepup with as it was a lot more on your own learning but was fab for prepping me for uni (: - if you've got any questions about the adv chem im happy to have a wee yap! - was a few years ago now since ive done it, also was around covid so i didnt have the assignment part included - would reccomend with the adv highers looking at your timetable and splitting in some of your free periods to study each so your ensuring a decent amount of time and not rushing to catchup! - also any type of study support offered definietly worth going to get any clarification on trickier topics😅

hope this helps a bit, best of luck!!

From my analysis, Adavnced higher chemistry and bioligy you should definately take. But satistically advanced higher math is more valuable for stem than physic. So if you struggle with math then choose physic for felxibility.

Conclusively, Choose AH physic, chem and bioligy. This is beacuse physic is less tough and less dense and heavy than AH math

Higher physics is hard but very interesting! I would recommend not doing it though as it will take your time away unless you had a very comfortable A and feel secure in the topicd.

dont do rmps becuase its not very valuable for stem or medicine. Politic is useful for law but for stem its pretty useless.

RMPS is very easy and makes sense why you want to choose but its subjective nature makes it an insignificant choice.
Higher physic is good but comparatievely higher math is more valuable. MAth is the father of science core stem subjects which is why univeristy generally find math to be more valuable

conclusiverlu my analysis conclude PICK Advanced higher BIOLIGY AND CHEMISTRY and crash higher MATH

Why don’t you think medical ethics (a third of the RMPS course) would be useful for the study of medicine? Medical schools certainly think it is in interviews and first year study modules.
