Options (aerospace)

Hello,
I have received aerospace offers, all contextual at Uo Sheffield, Uo Nottingham and Uo Southampton at grades AAB. Also AAA at Uo Bath. I live in Sheffield and am currently stuck between staying or going for Southampton, does anyone have any advice?

Southampton is higher up the rankings but Sheffield is also great with facilities and outcomes. Both are excellent choices and so you cannot go wrong with either. It just depends on you, do you want to experience somewhere different and new? Do you want the familiarity of home? What is important to you?

Hi there @P^2 ,
Have you gone for any Open Days in the past? I would recommend going for any upcoming offer holder days if possible 🙂 they are a great way to speak to current students and tutors on the course to clarify any doubts you may have about the university or course! It is also a great chance to explore the area and get a feel for the campus life 🤗

Hi!

Congratulations on your offers!

The engineering facilities here at Uni of Sheffield have a great rep, and my friends that did aerospace engineering here really enjoyed the course. I agree with some of the advice higher in the thread- visiting Open Days is a great idea, to get a feel for the city, the campus, the course, and the accommodation. It really allows for a good comparison between Universities, and I found it was great for helping me choose where was best for me. It's great that you're able to pop along to one of our future open days!

Sheffield isn't home for me, but it's my nearest city and University from my hometown so I'd visited the city several times prior. I often get asked by friends that live further away whether it feels too close to home because I was somewhat familiar with the city beforehand, but to be honest, it doesn't at all. I felt that my experience of Sheffield was completely different being at Uni here vs my experience beforehand, and it is really handy to be able to pop home easily.

Ultimately, I think it depends on your preference, as to whether you'd want to stay in Sheffield or move to a completely new city, whether you have a course preference, whether you have an accommodation preference (if living at Uni rather than home). If you were planning to live at home and commute if you were to come to Uni of Sheffield, of course finances might also play a role in your decision.

If you wanted to directly chat with a student who lives at home and commutes / is from Sheffield but goes to Uni here / who studies your course here, you can do so online via this link. They'd be super happy to answer any of your questions, and prospective students often find it helpful to chat to someone directly aligned with what they'd like to do. 😊

Please let us know if you have any other questions about Uni of Sheffield that we can help with to aid you in your decision- happy to help!

Hi @P^2 , congrats on your great offers. I'm a year 11 student and also want to do aerospace in the future, possibly at Sheffield/Southampton. Which kind of supercurricular activities did you do?

Hi @P^2 ,

Congratulations on your offers! It looks like you're choosing between some great aerospace programmes.

I'm excited to see that you're thinking of coming to Southampton! Have you seen that we offer Virtual Offer Holder days? They're an opportunity to hear from staff and students, ask questions in our live Q+A chats, and explore things like student life and accommodation. This could be a good first step in trying to compare both universities.

By the looks of things you're thinking more on the logistics of staying at home or moving away to university, which is incredibly understandable! I think there're a few things to think about here, including if you can see yourself moving away from home to live in Southampton for your three or four year degree.

Moving can bring some positives over staying at home while at university - a new city with lots to experience, and a new environment to explore (so a new adventure). And Southampton has an excellent aerospace offering and engineering community.

But I think in the end this is a deeply personal decision. One question I suggest you think about and ask yourself is: do you feel excited by the prospect of moving to Southampton? I moved from London to study here and I loved my time at Southampton. It felt like a new chapter and I was able to really become 'myself'. But everyone is different.

All this to say, trust your gut. I know you'll choose the place that not only ticks all your boxes academically, but which feels like home.

Wishing you all the best on your journey! Feel free to tag @Uni of Southampton Students if you'd like to chat to a current student, or visit our website: Chat to our students.

sorry for late reply, to be honest I did not really do too many super curriculars. I did participate in UKROC, I would recommend if your school does it then you participate. I also did a forage but that was because of my lack of experience. I also did some research into a current project in the aerospace world and showed my knowledge on it.

I would recommend you apply for Sutton trust in the beginning of y12 ,
participate in ukroc and find work experience at a company like bae systems, Lockheed Martin etc.
Also summer interships apply early!
Sorry for the long length
