Time to Talk - Advice from our Mental Health Nursing Students

We asked our mental health nursing students how a simple conversation can support someone who’s struggling. Here’s what they said:

Start with honesty
“Ask your friend: have you ever gone through this? What would you do?”
Opening up first can make it easier for someone else to speak.

Small moments matter
Coffee. Cake. A walk.
Even meeting 10 minutes early at the library before a lecture.
That one-to-one time can mean the world to someone.

You might not be alone in how you feel
They could be experiencing the same thing that you are and also struggling to open up. Starting the conversation helps both of you.

Find a safe space
It’s so important to create a space where people feel safe enough to talk honestly.

A conversation doesn’t have to be big or perfect. It just has to start.
Who could you check in with today?
