What are my chances to get into universities for CS

Hi, I’m applying for Computer Science and wanted some honest opinions on my chances.

I’m predicted 32 in IB:

Math HL: 5

Computer Science HL: 6

English B HL: 5

Physics SL: 5

Business SL: 5

Russian A Language & Literature: 5

I’ve applied to Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Leeds.
I know these are competitive, so I’m trying to understand realistically where I stand. Has anyone gotten offers with similar predictions, or knows how strict these universities are with IB scores?

Hi there,

Great predictions!

I cannot comment on how those unis will assess your application, but looking at the entry requirements of the courses you've named, I think you've picked 3 good and realistic options. There are of course no guarantees that you will receive offers esp as Birmingham appear to be asking for a 6 in HL maths and comp sci is in general a competitive subject, but that being said, universities appreciate that the IB is a very comprehensive and challenging programme, and most will also make aspirational offers to people with just under the asking grades.

I would recommend that you defo keep those 3 but perhaps also consider a uni with asking IB score and HL requirements slightly lower, such as 29-31 points with a 5 in HL maths rather than a 6.

Cardiff is a nice uni overall and is asking for 30-32 (665-655) as one example, and also, many unis also offer computer science with foundation years if you wanted to have a safe insurance choice.

I hope some of this helps, wishing you the best of luck 🙂

Look on the unis websites to see what grades they require.

hi , I already heard back and got offer from Leeds long back, have you not heard anything yet?
we both only have leeds in common, but when did u apply?
with ur stats u will prob get in so dont worry about it too much if u meet the requirements
did u apply for just comp sci at leeds or with a placement, etc?

Hey! I haven’t heard back yet still waiting on decisions. I applied on 14 January, so I think mine might just be a bit later in the review cycle.I applied for straight Computer Science at Leeds (no placement). Hopefully I’ll hear back soon 🤞
Thread moved to Applications & UCAS.

As above, it depends how close you are to the standard offer.

Oh yea, you applied just before the deadline so it may take a bit longer I think...
May I ask why you didn't choose placement?
(Not that u can't anymore & you have the option to choose again once u get in)

I didn’t rule it out I just wanted to keep my options open and I know most unis let you add a placement later.
