How my Sociology degree led me to a Data Analyst placement

Hey everyone 👋,

I'm a final-year Sociology with Psychology student at City St George's, and I wanted to share how my degree has opened up opportunities I honestly didn't expect when I first started uni. 🎓

A lot of people think Sociology is mostly theory-based, but what surprised me early on was how much of it is also about understanding data, spotting patterns and making sense of real-world decisions. Once I realised that, my degree started taking me down a much more practical and technical route and it's been genuinely exciting to see where that's led.

I know a lot of students worry about employability, so I thought it might be useful to share how I used my Sociology degree to build skills that employers value. 💼

What changed things for me: Data + Sociology with Psychology

In first year, I realised that being able to do both the social side of Sociology with Psychology and the data side was a huge advantage. It's something a lot of people are intimidated by, so getting comfortable with quantitative work really helps you stand out.

I put a lot of effort into my Quantitative Methods module, got a 1st, and that led me to joining the Q-step programme. My degree changed to Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics, which gave me proper training in things like data analysis and statistics.

What that led to in the real world 🌍

Because of the data skills I developed (especially using SPSS and analysing survey data), I secured a Data Analyst placement at the Greater London Authority (GLA)

This wasn't just observing or doing admin work. I was:
- Analysing real staff data used by the Mayor's office
- Seeing how data from the GLA and TfL feeds into actual decisions about how London is run

It was one of those moments where everything I'd been learning at uni suddenly felt very real.

Why I'm sharing this 💡

Three years ago, I didn't see myself going into data at all. Now I'm actively aiming for a career as a Data Analyst, all from a Sociology degree.

If you're considering Sociology, or already studying it and wondering what you can do with it, this is just one example of how the degree can lead to more technical career paths.

If you're interested in developing data and quantitative skills, the Q-step programme is definitely worth looking into. It focuses on building practical data analysis skills within social science degrees.

More information about Q-step is available here:

If you have any questions about my course, feel free to ask! 😊
