Help with personal statement!

I’m wanting to apply to undergraduate degrees in education as my end goal is to become a primary school teacher. My issue is that I’m unsure on how to write or even start my personal statement. Any tips or ideas would be great.
Hi there!

I’d say don’t overthink the opening, just start with why you want to teach.
What experiences made you realise primary education is right for you?
It could be work experience, volunteering, helping younger pupils, or even a teacher who inspired you.
Then link that to the skills you’ve developed such as communication, patience, leadership or organisation, and give short examples to prove them.
Keep it personal and reflective rather than generic. Universities want to see genuine motivation and awareness of what teaching involves, not just “I’ve always loved working with children.” Start simple, be specific, and build from there.

Hope this helps, but feel free to keep the conversation going if you need further advice

Hi @Flick232

Writing a personal statement can be really tricky, especially deciding what to write and how you are going to start it. When I was writing my personal statement, I started off by making a mindmap of everything that I might want to include related to my subject - for example, related experiences, personal skills, and future plans. My personal statement was the old style, so I then grouped the ideas into paragraphs however you could group them based on the sections. Hopefully this will help you to start to think about what you are going to write.

When it comes to actually writing your personal statement, you do not necessarily have to start at the start of it. I have always found that starting in the middle is easier because that is normally where I have more ideas. It is also helpful to just try to write something on your page and then go back and edit it later.

BCU have created a guide to writing your personal statement which you can access by clicking this link: https://bit.ly/46cEosx

Hope that helps!

Hello! I find jotting down ideas and create a list of all the things I want to include helpful first. Thing about all the important questions like what makes you want to become a teacher? How has your experiences shaped this? What interests you about teaching. What extracurriculars/ super cirriculars has helped you gain experience/ essential skills that's required for teaching. Also thinking from the admissions perspective helps. Like they need to see motivation reasons in there (preferably not common and specific to your experiences), they also need to see that you know what skills a teacher needs and that you have some of them already through any experiences you've done. It doesn't have to be anything too big just reflect deeply on things you've already done and you'll find you have so many skills you didn't even realise you had.

Hi there,

I hope you are doing well!! I would start by first of all writing a list of everything that you have completed previously (socieities you are a part of at school, extracurricular, what your interests are etc). This is able to provide you with a foundation and can give you an indication for the direction you want to take your statement. Then, I would write down all the reasons as to why you want to study this specific subject (good course, aspirations for the future, how past experiences have defined you).

Hope this helps you and good luck with everything!
