Having trouble picking a uni..

I have been given an unconditional offer to NTU and UAL, I can't decide what one to go to though! My grandad is worried about the danger of being in London and the cost of living there but then I'm not exactly thrilled about NTU as the course I want to go onto honestly doesn't look that appealing. After talking to students from both unis I've heard from both that they regret going to both NTU and UAL so I'm really stuck right now.

I have applied for Theatre Design at both unis.

Hey @jhfdgfhjghgjfg,

Congratulations on your unconditional offers for both NTU and UAL! 😁

Would it be possible to attend an Open Day/Offer Holder Day at either of the universities? Your grandfather's feelings about costs are understandable, as are yours about the NTU course structure - but the best chance you're going to get to really weigh up which uni is right for you is by seeing them in-person and having the opportunity to ask questions to course staff and faculty members.

Consider writing out a pros and cons list for each university, remembering that you can also choose to defer or take a gap year if you're still unsure of your decision. It might help to think about what initially drew you to applying to UAL and NTU.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your decision,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
Hi there 😊

Congrats on getting unconditional offers - it's an incredible achievement!

I can understand why you're torn with your options after hearing the mixed reviews from current students. But you have to remember that creative courses like Theatre Design can vary and some styles suit other people better.

When deciding what university, the most important factor is the course structure and fit. Are you able to be creative? Are you going to be in studios and design workshops all day - does this learning style suit you? Is the content covered in the degree something you're interested and willing to learn about?

The student expectation can really differ from student to student. For example some people like structure, independence, more creative outlooks etcs. It is about finding why you are interested in Theatre designs and which areas you're passionate about.

It is understandable that you are considering your grandad concerns and it's understandable when the cost of living is rising. However with living in a big city it's about being aware of your surrounding and UAL has support in place for first year students in terms of accommodation. With the cost of living, it is definitely important to budget but there are many ways to manage your finances like student travel discounts, working part time etc.

I hope this helps and good luck with your decision!

What other unis have you applied for?
If you have spoken to students from both and the students from both have said that they regret going there, could you not go to one of your other choices?

I’m in a similar situation as you. I got an offer from UAL for fashion marketing but I don’t know if I would end up choosing it. I also got an offer from mmu and it’s a cheaper option but idk if I’d like living in Manchester, but then again London’s cost of living is not a joke either

Hey @1choou,

Congratulations on your offer to study with us at Manchester Met! If you've got some concerns about the cost of living in Manchester, one of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to speak with one of our current students via the Unibuddy platform! We have loads of student ambassadors on the platform (including a few Fashion students) who would be great to answer any questions you have on budgeting and affordability in Manchester, as well as things like accommodations, transport etc. We also have a number of articles and short videos created by current students to help answer some questions you might have regarding this!

To get started, please visit: https://www.mmu.ac.uk/chat-with-us-unibuddy.

I hope this helps you with your decision!

Best of luck! - Louie 😊
