Subject help please

I am a year 12 student, who is now considering studying medicine. I am currently studying 2 A-Levels and 1 BTEC. I also feel kind of regretful now as I feel like I’m totally limiting myself from the start. Is it worth asking my sixth form if I can change it this far into the year or to consider alternative options? Any advice is appreciated I don’t really have much people to ask

What a levels and btec are you studying. And where are you thinking of applying to medicine. Also I don’t think many (if any) medical schools accept btecs. I would ask to switch but if you can potentially look at taking a gap year or look at taking an a-level privately.

Currently A level maths, chem and BTEC applied law. I’m still unsure of where to apply but I know most probably won’t accept BTEC I only took the BTEC as I was interested in law and my sixth form didn’t offer the A-level version I don’t want to regret not giving it a go but at the same time I’m not doing so well on a levels right now

Hey @Cloudy133,

It's definitely worth having a chat with your sixth form. They may not allow you to change this far into the year but they might provide alternative pathways (e.g. starting an additional A-Level next year) which are worth discussing if you're truly passionate about studying medicine. Reach out to your Head of Year/Head of Sixth Form, explain the situation and ask to arrange a meeting.

It's important to consider that medicine courses have very high entry requirements; if you find that your current workload with two A-Levels is quite heavy, it could be difficult to add a third and maintain the grades you need. It might be worthwhile speaking to your A-Level Chemistry or A-Level Maths teacher about target grades.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Many unis (not all but most) require a-level biology so if you really do want to pursue medicine I would definitely ask ASAP and if they say no it’s too late definitely look into being a private candidate.
I’m a gap student what are you struggling with in a-levels and what exam boards are you doing to see if I can offer you any support. As the above reply said medicine can be really hard to get into but you can check if you are contextual at any unis to see if that can lower the grade requirement. Also look into the UCAT and see how you fare on a test like that as it will be a little different from school work but don’t revise early as you will miss your peak scores.

Your school may say it is too late. But you dont know until you ask them.
Speak to them and see what they say. Every school has different policies.

Thank you for the reply AQA chem Edexcel Maths the subject areas aren’t like too bad it’s mostly the lack of revision and like being unsure of what I want to do as I’m doing pretty bad now I’m worried that even if sixth form say yes with another a level I might not be able to handle it all and could end up with worse results which is why I was also considering maybe pharmacy or nursing first and then post grad but still unsure about that too

I can’t speak for Edexcel maths but I did Aqa chem and it was very difficult. Things that helped me was to do quick overview of the topic if I was fairly confident on it then doing the older PMT (physics and maths tutor) questions on that topic so 2016-2021 ish as this helped me learn things I didn’t know and didn’t like making notes. Then once I revised all the topics to do the actual exam papers of the later years so I knew where my knowledge lacked. For the topics I struggled with I made sure to watch videos but tbh I couldn’t focus on the videos so I decided to make notes which helped me a lot and just blurt and revise them a lot then do the topic questions.
Also one thing that my sixth form had was sessions at lunchtime I likely recommend going as I didn’t make the most of these.

About post graduate medicine it is so much harder to get into than the five year courses so I would look into that before you decide.

Definitely ask your sixth form see what you say. But if you are struggling with these it may not be best for you to do another a-level on top of that.

But honestly if you think medicine is for you then try as hard as you can to pursue it, if it truly your passion don’t tell one grade stop you from doing it.
