There are 30+ student theatre societies across the university, putting on 100 productions annually, from musicals and classic plays to comedy, opera and performance art - there will definitely be something you love.
•
All of this is coordinated under Durham Student Theatre (DST), the hub for everything theatre at Durham. You join with one membership and can get involved across lots of companies - check out the website here: DST
•
College-based companies and university-wide groups both put on shows, so you can find something that suits your style and is perhaps more low commitment.
•
Durham Drama Festival (DDF) - an annual week-long festival of new student writing with multiple shows each year; several Durham shows have gone on to tour at the Edinburgh Fringe and NSDF!
•
DULOG (Durham University Light Opera Group) - one of the largest musical theatre groups on campus with multiple annual productions including performances at the city’s professional Gala Theatre and sometimes Edinburgh Fringe.
•
The Durham Revue - comedy/variety troupe that also traditionally performs at the Edinburgh Fringe each year.
•
Specialized companies like Fourth Wall (contemporary theatre), Walkabout (immersive shows), Shellshock! Improv, and more give space to very different styles of performance.
•
DST has its own main performance venue at the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre right in the city centre, plus shows in college spaces, Durham Castle, the Gala Theatre, and sometimes at Durham Cathedral.
•
There are also masterclasses, workshops and outreach projects you can join to build skills.
