Extracurricular drama at Durham

Hello! I have an offer for English at Durham but I was wondering if someone could tell me what the drama scene is like there!
I am a member of the national youth theatre and so drama is really important to me!
Do agents regularly come to Durham?
Does stuff go up to the fringe?
Just generally what opportunities are there?
Thank you in advance!!

Hiya!

First of all, massive congratulations on your offer at Durham 🥳 I study English too, so if you have any course specific questions, feel free to reach out!

Durham’s theatre scene is huge and really active, and has amazing opportunities whether you want to act, direct, write, choreograph, do tech, or try new things it’s super easy to get involved 🎭💜

What’s on offer:

There are 30+ student theatre societies across the university, putting on 100 productions annually, from musicals and classic plays to comedy, opera and performance art - there will definitely be something you love.

All of this is coordinated under Durham Student Theatre (DST), the hub for everything theatre at Durham. You join with one membership and can get involved across lots of companies - check out the website here: DST

College-based companies and university-wide groups both put on shows, so you can find something that suits your style and is perhaps more low commitment.

🎭 Big highlights you might love:

Durham Drama Festival (DDF) - an annual week-long festival of new student writing with multiple shows each year; several Durham shows have gone on to tour at the Edinburgh Fringe and NSDF!

DULOG (Durham University Light Opera Group) - one of the largest musical theatre groups on campus with multiple annual productions including performances at the city’s professional Gala Theatre and sometimes Edinburgh Fringe.

The Durham Revue - comedy/variety troupe that also traditionally performs at the Edinburgh Fringe each year.

Specialized companies like Fourth Wall (contemporary theatre), Walkabout (immersive shows), Shellshock! Improv, and more give space to very different styles of performance.

📍 Venues & Support:

DST has its own main performance venue at the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre right in the city centre, plus shows in college spaces, Durham Castle, the Gala Theatre, and sometimes at Durham Cathedral.

There are also masterclasses, workshops and outreach projects you can join to build skills.

🌟 Touring & Fringe:
Groups regularly aim to take shows to the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) and Edinburgh Fringe (though this is not a definite each year). Durham companies do have a history of festivals and tours, which is amazing for networking and exposure.

Check out Theatre at Durham for more information.
Look at these blogs and content created by students about Theatre.

Hope this helps! If you have any more further questions, reach out! Best of luck with your studies.
