Applying to Biochemistry in university

I'm in Year12 now and I'm thinking of applying to Biochemistry course in university. Is there anything I can prepare for now (e.g. work experience, research programme etc) and any tips for application/ interview? Thank you!

Hi @jisalone 👋

I'm currently a second year undergraduate studying biochemistry at the University of Essex.

Firstly, I'm really enjoying it! It's a great course and if you love biology and chemistry then its definitely for you.
Preparation wise, work experience is always a good thing as it allows you to get involved in work and labs etc. But also if you'd rather start the course and get a feel of it and then do some work experience that's not a bad thing.

But just keep enjoying your A levels and application wise - in your personal statement just be honest and write down everything that is interesting!

@Trickia any specific advice on biochem related stuff?

Generally recommendations:

Have a look at openlearn, springpod and edx for some online courses

Consider entering the cambridge biology challenge

Look out for webinars- channel talent and unifrog are really good

Podcasts and documentaries on the bbc are available

Google arts and culture and nature.com are good for articles

Hi there there are plenty things to do so it is just what you prefer and is easier for you!
Adding onto what other posters have recommended I suggest looking at the biochemistry mooc by UEA on futurelearn as a good starting point. There are a few books e.g. biochemistry by bowater (which gives a good intro building from a level bio/chem). Biochemistry is such a broad area it is a good idea to explore it generally and if you have any niche topics you enjoy to delve further into it (good for ps). For example going into journals, lectures etc.
Yes you need supracurriculars for interview/application but you do have to have genuine interest so that is the main starting point. If you want ideas either start of from what I have suggested and looking at the royal society of biochemistry webinars and guidebook or looking at uni courses that offer biochemistry or you are interested going to. As they will have a list of biochemistry topics you can go explore. Each uni despite offering biochemistry have different focuses due to their research strength! e.g. I applied to nottingham and UCL for biochemistry as I liked their strong cancer research links (which sound biomedical but I assure you they are not :h:)

Hoped this helps xx
