Aston vs LJMU

So I've applied to study MPharm at both unis (still going through interviews), but wondering which one I should firm/insurance later on. Both aren't Russell group but I'm wondering which one will support me the most and provide the best opportunities? I want to get into industry/big pharma as well. Also, I also have an interview for Uni of Birmingham but I've looked at accommodation prices and I wont be able to afford it even with my student finance loan. My parent said they could help me cover costs but it's like an extra 3k a year for them to pay and I'm not sure if it's worth putting that pressure on them just to go to a Russell group...

Hi there,

For pharmacy, the key thing is that the course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). All accredited MPharm degrees lead to the same route to registration and allow you to work across any sector once qualified.

At LJMU, the MPharm is very practice-focused, with strong links to organisations such as Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Royal & Aintree), Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Whiston Hospital, Merseycare and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, as well as GP practices and community pharmacies. This gives students solid placement experience and exposure to different areas of practice. LJMU pharmacy graduates have gone into community and hospital pharmacy, as well as roles within the pharmaceutical industry, research and regulatory settings.

Students also have access to two dedicated careers support teams. LJMU Student Futures which supports CV writing, mock interviews, placements and internship schemes, while Unitemps is the on-campus jobs agency offering paid part-time work during study, including research and lab-based assistant roles.

More information about the course can be found here: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2026/35577-pharmacy-mpharm

If you’d like a student perspective, you can message a current Pharmacy student via Unibuddy: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/chat-to-a-student

Best of luck with your interviews,

Hi,

I’m a third-year pharmacy student here at LJMU, and honestly it doesn’t matter where you study, as all MPharm courses are GPhC accredited. You apply externally through ORIEL for your training year placements after graduation, before taking the GPhC exam. LJMU is one of the oldest schools of pharmacy, and the support here is really great, with excellent teaching facilities such as dispensaries, labs, simulation suites, and placement links across Merseyside and Cheshire.

If you’re thinking about the pharmaceutical industry, there are opportunities such as the AstraZeneca 10-week internship for third-year students, based in Macclesfield or Cambridge to apply to. In fourth year, there’s also the option to attend an industry insight day, which gives a real feel for working in pharma.

Hope this helps, please do let me know if you have any other questions.
